Electrical, starting, misfire ect...
Ok it seems as if all of these problems have occured around the same time. At first my car wouldnt start all the time. The starter would click click click ect.. then sometimes I wouldnt even do that. Now i get it here and there. Also I got misfiring. Along with this misfiring my tachometer will bounce around. Even the tach will die sometimes. Now at some points the car will die while driving while the misfiring and tach bouncng happens. It feels like the fuel is cutting but then again it seems electrical due to the tach bouncing ect. I have searched at all i can come up with is the ignition coils but i do not understand how they would go bad only at times. I feel like its bad grounds what are some of your imputs. Icemark and AaronCake your imputs would be appreciated.
Also i just put fresh plugs in cuz i thought it was misfiring due to bad plugs. The plugs were terrible but the new ones didnt fix the problem.

when i say then sometimes it wouldnt even do that i mean i turn the key and i get nothing, the only mechanical sound would be the fuel pump, i could get radio and interior power ect, but i wouldnt get the clicking sound just a fuel pump and sometime a humm from somewhere i couldnt find.

ok also my volts seem to be jumping around while this is happening to, i am going to go ahead and clean the grounds according to aaroncakes write up, hopefully this works. Also i looked at them today and the ECU ground under the intake is FLITHY also the Battery ground on the shock tower is pretty bad also. I hope this works

NEED HELP ASAP, I have cleaned most of the grounds AaronCakes write up says other then the ECU ground under the UIM, I have taken the starter off, had it tested and it passed, i cleaned all the grounds on the starter, and still doesnt start, Also when i push start it the car runs like ****, backfire, misfire, just put new plugs in thought it would fix it but nope, also the tachometer is bouncing, and sometimes will die, also the car is running alot hotter then normal. I am at a lost of what to do.

CLEANED!!! You are speaking off the one on the inside strut tower and the ones on the starter are clean, also when it does run its the biggiest peice of **** ive ever driven. Hesitation, feels like fuel cuts off or something the motor dies and i get pop corn sound out the exhuast and the Tach goes nuts every misfire then it dies

also plugs are coming out black, all four. I have tried autolite 2626, autolite 3933, and stock NGK all brand new.. also the idle is fine, runs smooth its once u start driving, mostly when warmed up really good, then it seems to be running reallllly hot also

my car had the same problem i started playing around with grounds and added one from the battery to the engine on the front side and fixed it. maybe just play around with another ground and see what that does. sounds like a grounding issue sort of. my car had a bunch of electrical issues and ran like crap till i added one more.

just had it tested and charged, did nothing. click click click... i got it started via push start didnt last long and it ran really rough. i am lost on what to do. i hooked a cable to the positive on the battery terminal and hooked it right to the starter bolt and it turned the engine over but reallllly slow. does this mean bad starter? i need help guys i know there are more on here who can help. Also when its running why is it running like complete ****?

Clicking would tell you the starter is in fact good .... My previous 86 n/a had a starting problem, it wouldn't start at all. So I sold it as a roller and I later heard the buyer bought new coil packs and it fired right up. Try getting new or even just used coil packs.

no it needed gas to stay running. when u drive it the car dies and u got to down shift and pop the clutch to restart it. everytime it backfires, misfires ect the Tach dies or bounces. I guess it would make since that the coilpack being bad would cause the dead tach but when i pull the plugs all plugs are black. Running rich. If u drive around the neighborhood the car does alright a few misfires here and there. Once u get on the highway it goes all to ****. Miss firing, dying, runs really hot, not quiet overheating but certainly way hotter the i would like, i do not know what to do. I just started a new job at Sitel and do not get paid till April 10th i do not have the cash to buy expensive coilpacks and not be the solution. I need feedback from highly experienced people before i make any move. I have tried the screw driver trick on the solenoid bolts on tthe starter. It turns the engine over but ever so slightly. I have directly Wired the positive terminal to the starter bolt and it also turns over ever so slightly. have pulled the egi fuse while its turning over to get some fuel out. put it back in still no good. I can push start my car. Once started it runs like a pile of dick. i am so sick of this car right now i could drive it off a cliff.

Okay ... Well a similar problem happened to my 97 sunfire 5 speed... I was driving to work and the speedo died out, kept driving. About 5 minutes later I put it in neutral and the car died. Tried to start again and no go. So get your alternator tested.
I'm somewhat in the same boat as you right now. Very frustrated with my 87 t2, about ready to sell it because i'm sooooo mad at it. But the starter is my problem I think.

old thread but bringing it back...kinda have the same problem... had a friend look at the car and he said to clean the TPS... havent done it yet... when your car ran rough did it kinda sound like a lawn mower?? haha mine does
