electrical problem- guages and reverse sensor

i had a short on my "meter" fuse. i finally found that it was the reverse and/or 5th gear sensor that was blowing the fuse, so i unhooked them. i read on here that the reverse sensor gets power from the meter fuse (even though i did not see it in the fsm diagrams). now the fuse does not pop

anyway my question is: if the reverse/5th gear sensors are not hooked up, can the instrument cluster and warning lights loose power? my boost guage does not move to 0 when key is in "on" and no other guages work. the shift up light comes on and buzzer sounds but fuse does not blow anymore. so if i get a new reverse and 5th gear sensor should the instruments work and warning lights work?

thanks for any info, and yes the sensors and ecu and everything is hooked up, i've double checked everything

The ECU uses the neutral and 5th gear signals, but ted told me the boost gauge loops through the ECU, so it should not be affected.

However if the fuse was pulled or blown, yes the gauges, idiot lights, theft system, Logicon, backup lights, and cruise control would not work correctly.

thanks icemark, your the one i was hoping would respond b/c i searched and saw something about this and you seemed to know something about it

the 7.5amp meter fuse is back in and good

the thing is that when i had the short, the fuse would blow after about 2-3 secs. in that time the boost guage would go to "0". now the short is gone, but the boost guage does not move and neither does the fuel guage or anything else. all that happens is the shift up light comes on and starts buzzing

i guess i'll get some other sensors and hopefully that will fix the problem, i'm still confused though

now when you replaced the fuse, you only used a 7.5 amp one right???? you didn't use a bigger value??? like a 10 or a 15amp fuse???

of course, always 7.5amp

i used a short finder and that kinda helped to find the short, the wires by tranny started smoking a little when i used it. but its not supposed to let the circuit get hot enough to damage anything
and when i used it, the cluster was unhooked, and so were components like boost guage and fuel pump and other things, i took precautions

so basically, you think that the guage should be working right now even though the tranny sensors are not hooked up?

Sorry for bringing up such an old thread

I have an issue with my Guage Cluster, I just did an N/A to TII drive train swap. I did connect the 5th gear/reverse wires as well. My guage cluster works (sometimes) when i place a new fuse (7.5 AMP) but when i rev up the motor, once it reaches about 5k RPM's the cluster goes out. I think both these problems are related, but one other question.

If i take out the 5th gear/ reverse switch connectors will it affect the ride/performance of the car?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Adam

The ECU uses the neutral input to help control the idle.

The ECU uses the 5th gear switch (more accurately called the "over the top switch") for emissions control, and fuel economy control.

The cruise control uses the neutral input to prevent accidental un-intended acceleration in neutral.
