Electrical Grounding Issues

Electrical Grounding Issues
First of all, I know that "grounding" in a car is not really grounding. I'm going to call it grounding.
Second, here is what's going on: I've got my EV conversion almost ready to fly. So now I'm putting in the dash, reconnecting the wiring, etc, and trying to get the accessories to fire up...fans, lights, dash, etc.
So I hook up all the connections I can figure out, connect the battery and...nothing.
I go and take a closer look, and it appears as though there are two grounding wires that I did not hook up. I figure this might be the problem.
One wire is thick black wire with a yellow stripe, and the other is a thick black wire with no stripe. The one with the yellow stripe ends in a round copper terminal, and the other one ends in sort of an oblong copper terminal. If these aren't grounding wires, I don't know what they could be.
So I go to hook up my battery, and I get sparks. Sure enough, when I hook up my multimeter, I'm getting a short.
But, when I trace the wires back, the one with the yellow stripe goes back to the negative terminal of the battery hookup...and the black wire goes to the positive terminal...wouldn't this always cause a short?!
I am very confused. If anybody has advice, please help!

Black/Yellow large gauge cable gets attached to the outboard bolt that holds the starter in place OR gets bolted to one of the transmission/engine attach bolts.
THAT is the main ground cable for everything on a stock RX.
That same cable has a smaller cable spliced to it and that one terminates below the left front strut tower. Might call that the CHASSIS ground.
