ECU Tune up vs. Piggy Back System

EXACTLY what does the ECU tune up or chip upgrade really do? The speeds up ignition timing and gives more fuel correct? Would a piggyback system allow me to tune this as well and give me more "tune-ability" for more available and timely modifications? Or am I daffy...

What would be the best way to tune my N/A's ECU and get the most out of my modifications?

Do you have access to a dyno?
If you don't you'd better off with someone else reprogramming your ECU.

I have been trying to decide between these two options for my T2. I am running pretty rich and wasn't sure if I should go the S-afc route or go ahead and just get a chip. I have intake, exhaust, fcd and FD fuel pump. If anyone could share their opinions or experiences to help on the decision, it would be very helpful.

Could you elaborate a little more and give me reasons why? I have been considering the E.L. prototype chip since others had good results. How much power am i looking to gain through the powerband by leaning the low end up some with S-afc. Also how hard is it to tune? thanks for your help btw.

It's a very easy unit to install. All it should take is a ratchet, an extension, a 10 mm socket, wire cutter's and some electrical tape. Took me a WHOPPING 20 minutes to install.

It's a fuel computer however, so if you're looking to tune the timing side, you'll need to get another type of piggyback.

With the SAFC, if you do more mods to your FC and you need to add more fuel...simply turn the fuel up on the high throttle and there you have it.

Turn down the fuel on the low throttle will lean out the mixture at idle.

the S-AFC is strictly fuel adjustments then correct? Does this mean ill need to buy a stand alone to adjust ignition timing?

Yes, but wait, there's more.

Without a dyno and measuring your Air/Fuel ratio, both those units will never see their full potential. At $300 for a reprogrammed chip, you're going to spend at least that much on the 2 piggy backs and then you have to pony up at least another $100 for the dyno time to get them tuned right. Adding more mods doesn't mean 'simply' adjusting the piggy backs to take advantage of them either. It means back to the dyno, spend more cash, etc.

If you don't need to extract every single last hp you can get, the chip is probably the way to go. If you do want all the power the motor will put out, then skip the piggy backs and go straight to a stand alone EMS.
