ECU Help!!

o.k. i was getting code errors from the ecu so i pulled one from another car and was wondering is there a specific part number that goes with the ecu based on the year of the car? the one i want to try to hook up is either from an 88 vert or a 90 GTUs. i am considering hooking it up to my 89 vert to see if my old ecu is screwed. any insight?
the one i pulled out from my 89 vert has the numbers N353 on it, and the other one i found in my brothers room has N351 on it. does it matter what numbers are on it? can i plug this sucker in without risk of screwing up my computer or anything else?

the 88 one will not work with an 89. the 89 vert one should work with other 89-91 non turbos.

Match the first two numbers after the "N", and it should work.&nbsp The N351 will work in an N353 and vice versa.

I have a bad ECU - N353. Found a N351 to buy. Can I ask for a second opinion about their compatibilty? I have a 91 vert n/a. I am not 100% sure my ECU is bad, I kinda need to know if they are compatible so that if the new ECU doesn't help I will be relatively certain that the ECU is not the problem. Thanks - Glenn

Glenn, i have an 89 Vert so i decided to do the same thing(replace the ECU to see if that was the problem). i just swapped out the original one on my vert(N353) with another one i found in my brothers room which is definitely either from an 88 vert or a 90 GTUs(N351). it worked just fine and i got the same errors...soo i swapped my original ECU back in. i can now rule out my ecu as being the problem!

A 1988 convertible ECU is an N338 number on it.

Fred - Thanks for the info. Based on your input I will be buying a N351 tomorrow. As luck would have it I found someone on the forum who has one to sell who is in town (closer than Guam!).

The internet and this forum are the best things since sliced bread! Good luck with your problem.

I have read some stuff on the ECU and from what I understand there are a LOT of "cold solder joints" that will pop up after years of use. I guess it wouldn't hurt IF you are decent with electronics and know how to solder, to maybe go ahead and touch those joints up! Buy hey, if you can get another on for cheap that would probably be THE way to go! At least you would always have a back up if one fails! Good luck!
