ECU ground question

This should be a simple yes or no. Does the ECU need to be bolted down to be grounded and operational? I'm trying to trouble shoot my lack of spark and the computer is unbolted because I thought that was the problem, but the new ECU didn't change anything. I'm thinking wiring harness next...., but I digress.

No. It can sit on foam rubber and work.

The only thing I can think of that NEEDS to be bolted down are the coil assy's.

You need a digital meter to find out what is wrong with your car. You must have verifid all the EGI fuses are good and the ENGINE fuse in the interior is good. Right? After that, if all the harness plugs are on, then you need a digital meter to find out what the deal is.

There have been several people who have removed the afm's elect plug and the car finally started. That would be due to the *ref voltage*coming from the ECU being shorted out. Try that. It takes but a few moments to remove a afm plug and try. YOu need a digital meter to fix your car.

I just bought a digital meter for it and checked a couple of wires for continuity and didn't come up with anything but I can't reach from the ECU end to the coil end. I just read about the AFM thing while I was searching so I'll try that. Thanks.

You don't really need to ohm anything out. You need to pull the small, white, two socket plug off the LEAD coil assy. Then put the meter on volts dc. Positive lead on the black/yellow wire in that small white plug. Negative lead on a ground nearby. Like the base of the Lead coil assy or battery neg terminal.

No voltage? All fuses are considered to be good since you ALREADY looked at them before you wrote this thread. Common sense thing to do.

Pull the two wire plug off the Main Relay. Key to ON. Check the black/white wire in that plug for batt voltage. CAn't tell which is black/white and which is Black? Check both then. Should have batt voltage on one that is black/white.

No voltage on either? Well the black/white gets fed from the ENGINE fuse. Check or put in a new ENGINE fuse.

You HAD voltage at the black/white? Then pull the four wire plug off the Main Relay. Find the Black/Green wire in the plug. It should have batt voltage on it. No voltage? It gets fed by the 40amp EGI fuse in the engine bay. Fix that fuse or connection to it at the bottom of the engine bay fuse box.

Stuff like that takes a half hour or so. Not time or money consumming.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know how it turns out. And yes, the fuses were the first things that I checked.

IT WAS THE AFM!!!!!! I UNPLUGGED IT AND IT STARTED! It ran rough, but I would expect that with the AFM unplugged. Now I just have to buy a replacement.

generally if you unplug the afm the car will start then die within a few seconds
