Eccentric shaft bolt Torque

Im putting the front cover back on my 91t2 engine and need to know what to retorque the eccentric shaft bolt to. I also need to know what type of loctite to use on it.

Torque values

The eccentric shaft pulley hub bolt torques to 80 to 90 foot pounds. I normally try to hit a value in the middle of the recommended range, or 85 foot pounds.

Use Blue color Loctite. This is sold as Loctite brand Locknut. It acts like an elastic lock nut does. It will not back off but disassembly is easy. The use of any stronger Loctite will make it nearly imposible to take it apart again. Make sure the copper sealing wahser is in good shape. A bad washer will leak like hell.

It is absolutely CRITICAL you measure the protrusion of the hub from the front of the eccentric shaft before you tighten the bolt down. This measurement is done with a caliper's depth measuring rod. Measure the difference between the sealing face of the pulley hub (where the copper washer sits) and the front of the ecentric shaft. This measurement should be NO MORE than .0961 inches, or 2.44MM. A measurement of much more than this indicates one or both of the flat needle bearings have slipped off the spacer and are pinched between the spacer and thrust plate(s). The measurement is performed by pushing the pulley hub onto the shaft by hand and then measuring the depth. Do not tighten the bolt down then measure after removing the bolt. Doing so will ruin the bearings if they have slipped off.

A depth of .1000 or so is still good. If the bearing has slipped you will get a measurement that represents the normal depth plus the thickness of the bearing, so if things are screwed up it will probably be very obvious to you.

If the bearing is not in its correct position, the only way to correct this is by removing the front cover and reassembling the whole bearing/thrust mechanism again.

To help prevent this from happening, never rotate the engine or bumb the eccentric shaft while the hub is removed.
