Ebay turbos. Questions inside. :)
I have been looking at different turbos. All ranging from $400 to $2k.
I don't want to make a lot of horsepower. Considering approx. 300 max. Would like to boost low in the RPM, and peak quickly. 8-10 psi? This will be on stock N/A internals.
My questions....
What CFM am I looking for? What is the CFM for a 13B? I would like to know, so that I can look at the compressor maps for different turbos. I have read through Corkey Bells "Turbocharging" book. Interesting, and gave me things to think about.
Which turbo's should i be avoiding? I see some T3 saying max 275 HP, which is fine with me, I don't want more. I just want the boost quicker.
I am new to boosting a rotary engine, but not new to working on engines or boosting a four cylinder. Have only turbocharged about 4 other cars, all four cylinder engines. 1 being my car, 3 being friends.
I have read Aaron's stuff.
Anymore information on getting boost sooner, and not trying to max HP. Will be squirtin' soon..... (mega squirt v3.1). This turbo project is planned for next summer. Buying things for the turbo conversion throughout the year. Turbo is an important part of the "turbo'ing" process, so I thought I would start doing research on a good turbo.
So, basically, quick spooling / lowish boost. Suggestions? Planning on $300-$400 for the turbo itself. I'm also not a stranger to rebuilding a turbo.

BNR hybrids will be a nice route, and can definitely make the kind of power you're looking for (http://www.bnrturbos.com/2ndGen.htm). The stage 1 uses a T04B V-trim wheel, and the stage 2 uses a T04B H-trim in a T04 housing. Both of these turbos will be quick spooling. The Stage 3 & 4s use 60-1 wheels, which is good for the 350-400 whp range, but peak boost will also come on later in the rpm range.

If he wants to spend no more than $400 on a turbo then BNR would not be a good choice. If you want to go with the ebay turbos be aware that you are taking a chance, since some people have had bad reviews. Others have had no problems though, I know a lot of people that run them with no issues, the manifolds too. Search ebay turbos in the single turbo section for more info.

I trust ebay turbos (on lower boost levels) far more than I trust ebay manifolds. I have NEVER seen an ebay manifold not crack or warp on any type of car, not after a year or two at most and usually just a few months. I've seen ebay turbos survive for a while as long as they aren't pushed too hard.
One of the biggest issues with turboing a rotary (compared to a 4 cylinder) is boost control. Of the internally wastegated turbos out there, only the BNR turbos can control boost, and it's still tricky on them sometimes. So that means you need an external wastegate. And with the high compression n/a rotors you may need a larger wastegate to keep boost levels low. So it starts to get much more expensive than you expected real fast... it's not like getting a civic or dsm and throwing an internally wastegated 16G on there with a stock manifold (Civic HF mani with adapter or stock TD05 dsm manifold).

If you're worried about ebay turbos you could always send it off to this guy and get it pretty much rebuilt as a garrett, and warrantied to boot.

Well, I read up a little more, and have priced things out some more.
I can turbo my N/A for approx. $2.5k. That is external WG and FMIC, piping, etc. Megasquirt is included in that price.
Think it would be any better to just buy a used TII? I have considered it, but of what I would want to do to it, rebuild, port, upgrade turbo, FMIC, external FPR, etc. It would cost significantly more then modifying my N/A.
Seeing as how I wouldn't be using my 5/6 ports, before I throw the turbo in, I will probably eliminated them. Has anyone ported and connected the main ports with the auxillary? Does that create massive idle problems? My initial guess would be no, seeing as how I can "tie" open the aux, and idle stays the same.
Also, anyone have pics of the housing, intake ports from the outside? Will a TII manifold bolt up to a N/A housing? If I am pulling the motor, and going to have a large street port done, I may be able to modify the intake ports to line up, if it isn't too difficult.
I will more then likely be buying an aftermarket exhaust w/ external wastegate piping. I prefer the nicer look and the bends to the old rusty look. And, external WG makes me happy. None of that porting the stock one to avoid creep.
I am slowly building an excel spreadsheet w/ costs. And, progessively will be taking things off the list as I buy them. Hoping to have everything ready for next summer. How long does a normal rebuild on a motor take? If most of the insides are good? Never rebuilt a rotary engine, but have a lot of experience w/ cylinder motors. Rotary "appears" easier.

The Chinese turbos will fall apart, I have personally seen it. Its also a hit or miss with used turbos, or even the " garrett remans" on ebay.
You want to stick with a T4 frame turbo, A 57 or 60 trim To4E is what you're after. Quick spooling, low to mid 300rwhp range on most setups. $800~ is the price new...

or you just watch the classifides, and pick up a used hybrid fro cheap.
im going to be pulling my hybrid off as soon as i get a wastegate and selling it..
its holset time for me...
would save you money, and mounts in stock location..
