duel battery setup

I just got my first rx7 today (it's an 87' GXL) and Love it...I'm pretty big into my sound systems so I'm looking at setting up a duel battery setup. I want to know if anyone has set up battery in the storage bins, how they mounted the battery, and what I should look out for when drilling/setting it up. I'm looking to have a optima red top in one storage bin and have yellow top in the other.

probably won't get a lot of help around here on this subject because most of the members are sport car enthusiasts. there is a few threads on battery relocations to the storage bins but do it right as it is a dangerous place to put batteries.

use the search function to find the info.

First of all, what are you trying to accomplish.
Adding more batteries just up's your reserve of playing your stereo WITH THE ENGINE OFF - is this what you're trying to do?
The S4 Zenki stock alternators are CRAP.
Adding one amp will most likely tax your stock alternator.
Do you have an upgrade alternator?
This is a much better option...

Well I'm going to upgrade my alternator and I'm going to have the yellow top for the stereo off but I also want to have the batteries back there for less weight in the front.

you dont really need two batteries as long as you have a good high amp alternator. i would suggest getting either an FD alternator up to 130 amp output, or you could try to do a custom mount 6G alternator or a custon CS144 or CS130 alternator where the posibilities are pretty limitless

If you are going to mount in the storage bins, you need to secure the battery properly. A battery box should be built with the appropriate holddowns, and that box should be bolted through the body to some decently thick plates on the underside. In a collision, the battery becomes a 60 LB projectile and will tear through most anything.

Obviously, proper electrical considerations must be taken. You need a breaker or fuse on each battery. If you are going to mix deel cycle vs. starting (Red and Yellow) then be aware that each has different charging requirements. If you do cycle the YT, your alternator will not have a high enough voltage to give it a proper finishing charge. So it's life will be reduced somewhat. Probably not a big deal. Just connecting them in parallel will work if you are willing to accept the above.

Also, consider using something other then Optima. In the last 3 years or so, the quality has greatly diminished. Corresponds with the time they started selling in the discount stores. Deka or Exide are both very good brands. I tend to stick with Deka. Both make a spiral cell, if that's what you like.

mate just get a bigger Alt and a better battery, if thats not enough then look at a 1 farah Cap (or bigger) with your sub amp and you should be fine.

or if your going DB drags, then go a forklift batteries 14V and higher discharge rate.
