Umm why ? you could but you would have to drop the entire front sub frame.

sounds like even more work.

I saw 2 dudes drop a flat 4 into a forester on youtube once. I don't know how they did it, but they did, and without a scratch either.

im waiting for the video.

Dropping the subframe still require an engine lift to lift the front part of your vehicle up. =/

Sounds like a 1 way ticket to the chiropracter. Maybe if you just drop in the short block, then bolt on from there. Otherwise, it's a bad idea.

2x4 and a chain.

have one person on each side of the engine bay with a shoulder under it and just stand up. may have to take off the front wheels for more clearance.

I know what your talking about. For rx7s Im pretty sure its not possible because of the sub frame.

But on other cars its possible. I 've done it on a couple of my friends hondas. were we just drop the motor out the bottom of the car. get a big jack raise up the car and slide the motor out.

Before I had a cherry picker we would have 4 guys. 2 would take some good rope or chain and lift it straight up while one jacked up the wheeless front for clearance and the other pushed the car back. We did this a number of times helps to take everything off so your just lifting the block.. hope it helps

You know, back in the day, that the term shade tree mechanic was not a deragatory one? It came to be for a reason, dont you think?

What they used to do is, they got a car up under a shade tree, then got a rope, and threw it over a nice thick branch. Then, they pulled it high up, while someone else pushed the car out of the way, and then dropped in back down on a roller or something.

At least, this is what my elderly neighbor taught me!

Most rental stores can supply you with an engine hoist for about $20 a day. Cheap, and far safer then trying to lift it out by hand.
