My suggestion to you is to try and attend one of those drift events with pro drivers.
If possible try and get a ride in one of their vehicles.
I promise it will open your eyes.

i gotta agree with reted on this one...although i havent ridden in a pro car YET...just cuz u spin out doesnt mean ur drifting...i mean i'd spun out doing drift doughnuts in a parking lot...or back when i can my 500hp camaro i spun out flippin a bitch in as court...it doesnt mean ur drifting...although i do disagree with "if u havent curbed your car" view...just cuz you havent curbed it yet doesnt mean ur not drifting, or ur driving too slow...it just means you havent curbed it yet...i was reading several interviews with D1 drivers and one or 2 of them said they havent crashed yet...so judging sumone on if the ran into **** yet isnt the best system...

AE86, very light weight, and expensive to upkeep (at a drift level.) 240sx, is a pig, but stops and accelerates great.... BOTH handle transitions and sliding complete different.
Spend some time learning how to maintain your car. This will be your #1 most important thing, no matter what you are drifting. Next most important is SEAT TIME! Not just drifting, but get out and run some auto cross events. You can find them at www.scca.org Seat time is invaluable. Learn to control you car, and drifting will come naturally.

Second part I agree on.
I don't agree with the first part at all...
AE86's can scavenge most of the 2-door coupe / hatchback SR5 models - there are LOTS of them still around.
S13's are all over the place.
The S13 already has the steering angle - AE86 is almost the same.
FC3S does NOT.
-1 on the FC3S already out of the box.
The FC turbo has the power advantage, but most of you are trying to slide an FC NA - so power advantages are NIL.
SR20DET makes significantly more torque versus a comparable 13BT with same amount of mods - torque is your friend in drifting.
The S13 and AE86 are just easier to learn with, especially if you're beginning.
The FC is NOT an easy chassis to oversteer...

I drift my fc....I had a 95 240sx se before I got my 87 T2. Drifting a 240sx is cake compared to the fc. I like the fc cause it's a bit more challanging. The 240 is like...rev to 3500 rpms pop clutch then punch the gas....the fc is like.....rev to 5000 rmps pop clutch punch gas then adjust throttle accordingly to stay in the drift. You have to adjust the throttle in the 240 also, but it's not as touchy by far. I say srift if you really love it, don't do it if you just want to look cool. I also love traditional racing. Drifting is really only needed in racing if you are in a rally race, but drifting does take skill and it's so damn fun.
