The #1 thing that makes you a good drifter is YOUR DRIVING SKILLS.
A good drifter will be able to drift a piece-of-**** AE85 with a carbed 4AC not even making 100hp all the way to some race-prepped, 500hp monster will full sponsorship suspension.

those aren't cheap, but they're cheaper than new, I got lucky on ebay and bought some TEIN HA's for 450, and luckily they're still good. I know how it is being 18 and trying to scrape together enough money to get things done, its not easy. if you can find a good job that pays well then it helps alot, i found mine working at the post office. Try not to be to cheap on your car tho because sometimes thats not always a good thing. good luck

coilovers will definetly be better... if you get decent ones. so, don't get megan's. actually, I've heard 'ok' things about the racing ones... but not the street ones.
if you're on a budget, but want good coilovers, look into KTS, or stance. I think they both can be had for~ $1100, and both are definetly good products.
or find something used.

Definitely! In a way, I'm somewhat glad that I'm on a monthly budget... it gives me more time to learn my car before and after a new part is added, and it makes me value my car even more.
Having the money to dump into your car and build it all up at once is convenient I'm sure, and don't get me wrong, but many people do that without an understanding of how to simply drive it.
My friend just got his sr s13 running, and has already put every penny into a hardcore suspension and more, yet has never driven it before and has no experience with it at a previous state.

Whats wrong with Megan Coilovers? One of my good friend is running them and SWEARS by them. I was thinking bout getting them for my car, but if other people are having problems with them, I might just go with hks.

You dont need a turbo to drift. I drift perfectly well in my NA. GTUs, full exhaust and intake, weight reduction, suspension. I have more than enough power. I dont know where you got those numbers of 130bhp, thats way less than mazda says. 160hp at the flywheel from the factory. Do a good intake setup, full exhaust and you will have around 180bhp. Add in an SAFC you can probably get around 160whp on stock ports.

I also have the GTUs rear end, It helps. also have intake, and Full RB exhaust (well minus header) But my car dosnt seem to like 4th gear drifts too much. not quite enough power for that type of speed.
I dont recall very many Corollas in the D1 events that make 100hp... infact a lot of them make 3 times that amount. Why do you think all(most) every D1 car is making so much horsepower? dont you think that if this was the case when drifters baught there cars they would swap out that high horsepower motor for something a little more reliable?
The #1 thing that makes you a good drifter is practice, and seat time. Ive seen this firsthand.
Ive seen people where it took them weeks to figure out how to simply do a doughnut, and after countless hours of seat time they're awesome, and some of the best drifters i know. others are amazing drivers and even enjoy drifting... but because they dont have a lot of seat time or dont practice very often, they are sub-par.
question for the thread starter; Do you buy new tires for your rear? do you buy used tires for your rear? what size tire do you run F/R?

Comparing them to those ebay XS power turbos, well then F megans.
I run new dunlop sp 5000s 205 55 15s in the front, and used 205 55 15s in the back. I'm installing dtss elim, camber link, steering angle, strut bars, blah blah blah and a lot more in the next few days to get the suspension more in tune before the upcoming drift event March 24 here in VA.
I was going with the whole 'lets go turbo 6 port!' idea for a while, started gathering the parts, then said, WTF gimme suspension! Go buy my turbo parts and help fund my suspension, check the classifieds

From: We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?
I did not want to get into an argument about Megan coilovers, but come on. They are junk. I ordered 2 different sets for my 240. Te first set I got the adjustment collar was seized and it had 3 different rate springs in them. I decided ok thats an honest mistake. So I sent it back and got another set. They looked to be good, nothing was messed up. I installed them and did one auto-x day, and the day after ran a track day. I got off the track loaded up my stuff and headed home. Hit a small bump leaving the track and heard a very loud crack, and boom my passenger front bottomed out. The adjustment collar(again) slid all the way down its thread destrying the coiul over and ruining my new front bumper.
Long story short, ill never buy from megan again.

my advice is just to save your money and get a good set of coilovers like tein or tokikos yea it may take a while for you to get them but its worth the wait than just putting on any sus. on your car thats going to cost you more money.....i learned that from my exp. its taking me almost 2 years to finish my project and thats because i want it done right i know what it feels like to be on a budget with wife and bills it hurts but you have to take care of your nesesites first and then your project so just keep doing what your doing save your money and get something thats going to last long

coilovers are nice but you dont NEED them. you can get a good amount of adjustability from using different spring rates, adjustable struts/shocks, and adjustable strut/sway bars. If you are very picky and pride yourself in your ability to tune suspension then you will definitely want coilovers instead, but if you don't plan on spending lots of time on a skid pad/track you probably will never get picky enough with the setup to need coilovers if you have adjustable dampners already. I don't think anyone should really bother with coilovers unless theyve just got lots of money, and/or plan on weighing the car on all 4 corners and doing a very serious suspension setup.

I think you are totally wrong.
for drifting, esp. with a lower powered car, a stiffer suspension seriously helps with everything. a spring and shock combo simply is not stiff enough if you are trying to go as far as possible without increasing power.
not saying you can't do it with just spring/shock, and a stock motor (I mean, look at colin frost). but stiff suspension will def. help. especially on a snappy car like the FC.

bottom line im just sayin you dont NEED to have rediculously stiff suspension to drift, although it can help. I'd say eliminating the DTSS is more important that coilovers/shocks and springs in the short run. if you have the money by all means get coilovers, but you can spend a lot less money and still drift perfectly fine with a strut/shock and spring combo (which you can get to be VERY stiff indeed, plently stiff for drifting), without having to bother with actually tuning a set of coilovers for the car (if you do it right it takes a while).

You said you dont drive at any real events, so im assuming you are drifting on the streets. In which case id like to know why you are 4th gear while trying to drift? You dont need to be in that high of a gear, especially if you are on the street. You say your car lacks power, well then you most definitely dont need to be in 4th gear.

2nd gear drifts no problem, ever. 3rd gear i can usualy pull off depending on the corner. 4th gear. exteremly hard i think ive done maybe 3 4th gear drifts in my FC ever. and ive tried plenty of them.
