Door Lock Actuator for Hatch Release
I'm currently working on installing an alarm system into my RX7, adding keyless entry, remote hatch release and even remote control of the sunroof (for auto closing, venting and closing without walking outside). The installation process in my case is very extensive, which includes gutting the interior (including the dash, heater, and blower assemblies), unwrapping, weeding, rerouting--and in one case building--the factory wiring harnesses. This is as much for hiding the alarm installation as it is for reliability and appearances.
During some searching on the forums, there were some vague references to using a door lock actuator instead of the trunk release kit. So, I ordered some actuators, two small foot print Omega-branded units for the doors and one cheap Bosch-branded actuator from PartsExpress.
Upon installing the cheap actuator, I found that it did not have enough pulling force. Using a digital fish scale, I found that you need an actuator with at least seven pounds of pulling force.
Upon learning that the Directed Electronics 524N actuator was rated for 10 pounds, I ordered one. Upon installation, I tested it with a car battery, which worked consistently every time.
Bottom line: a door lock actuator will release the hatch, but it must have least seven pounds of pulling force for it to work. The DEI 524N 2-wire actuator will work for this application. Presumably, anything rated for pulling more than seven pounds should work.
