Does a 88 GXL have 4piston calipers and a aluminum hood?
I did a search and no one talks about the GXL. Everyone talks about the GTUs, the 88 GTU, and the sport edition.
I konw that the GXL is the luxury model basically, but does it have 4piston calipers and a aluminum hood? Do only some have a aluminum hood?

I recently picked up an 88 GXL parts car and it had an aluminum hood. I can't tell you if it was there from the factory of if someone added it later on though.

i dont think that the alloy hood was standard on the autos. i just got some parts from a 91 gtu auto. that hood was steel. it also didnt have the 4 pot calapers but it was the 5 lug.......anybody got an answer for that one??????

I think it was luck of the draw, my friends 88 vert has an alluminum hood. My 89 GXL has a steel hood, his other 87 NA has a steel hood, and our 86 has a steel hood too

Mine looks just like Benharts so I guess I have all the same as well..I do know I have 5 lugs..The aluminum hood I am not sure off..How do I tell if it is aluminum??

Some of the early turbo's came with steel hoods, some of the GXL's, S4 versions, came with aluminum hoods. Convertibles had aluminum hoods as do the later S4 and S5 Turbo's.
Hit or miss on the early sports and the GXL's. I think you'd be hard pressed to find an S5 GXL with an aluminum hood unless retrofitted.
Broad statements indicating this or that had this or that option are generally inapplicable to these cars, especially in the early years.
The S5 GTU was the bottom of the line. It did not have the larger brakes period. Even the 91 coupe which did not have a separate designation, had the weaker brakes if you chose the lower accessory group as opposed to the one that made it more like the GXL of previous years.

My 91 A/T has a steel hood, but 4-piston calipers. From what I've read, all 91's came with 4-piston calipers.
My first 86 had 4-lug hubs and an aluminum hood, stock. Figure THAT one...

According to the 91 dealer brochure, there were two versions of the 91 coupe you could get. The lower or higher level for sake of argument.
If you chose the lower level, it ended up being like the previous years GTU, the higher level like the GXL.
I want to double check the brakes. I am curious to see if they changed depending on what level you chose.

My 86 sport has a steel hood, the 88 vert carcas had a AL hood, 86 GXL had steel, 88 GXL had steel, 89 GXL had steel. 86 base in JY has an AL hood{IT IS TOAST,however}
