Question Do you think this would be a good car for me?

Ok i am 16 and want ot buy my first car and i love this car the FC RX7 but do you think it would be a good one for me? You think it would cost too much (to repair and rebuild the engine) for my age? I do have a job a POPEYES that pays 5.75 an hour. You think it would be too time consuming and everything even though i love cars and know alot about them? Tell me if this car is too much of a responsibility and too costly for a kid at my age. thank you.

if you're asking us, then yes

a car is a big deal

i bought my first car when i was around your age (22 now) and it was a civic hatchback...hood dented, windshield had a crack...but i didnt care because i was working at taco bell making minumum wage...i thought i could bring it back up to spec...but you have to factor in repair costs, insurance, the whole nine

long story short, i had to sell my car because i couldnt afford it

ask yourself this...do you need a car or just want one...
because you'll be paying for a car that wont be what you want, unless you wait a year or two when you know you can get an rx7 or whatever car you want and pay the bills that come along with it

more or less yeah

but i dont know your financial situation

mine sucked, so i waited until i was 21 to buy a car when i have enough money

you make the final decision here...i'm just sharing my experience with you

if you do buy one, make sure it's an NA
turbos are more expensive and prone to servicing

most people here will say no, but i do it. although i do everythign my self. if i had to pay a repair shop to do my stuff then i dont think i could afford it. if you arent willing to work alot on this then dont go for it. if you need a car that will start everytime and not have problems dont get an rx7.

if you really like the rx7 start saving up some money for it. by a cheap reliable car now and learn to work on it. once you think you can do this then go for it.

My first was when I was 21... I got it for 1300 then within the next 3 months I had to invest.....
airpump caught fire = new down pipe.. 75$
new cat back 400$
Insurance (no tix or acx) 110$ per Mo.
tune up 75$
So... I was lucky I had saved more than initial purchase price... Be sure you have at least $500 surplus to be on the safe side... Saved my ****...
GoodLuck... Definatly go with an N/A You'll respect the power of a T2 MORE when you get one later if you so choose....

I think what rockstar said is good advice. Be sure to have some funds available if the situation needs them. Other than that, I think rx-7s are a good first car to have. I've had mine for almost a year now and I've loved every bit of it. Get a lot of glares from the ricers though, I found it was just to smile back.

I see... well... I would defenitly WANT to do all of the work on my own, the only problem is that i live in a apartment so if oneday it wont start what could i do?(you arent allowed to work on your car in the parking lot... ). so i guess if my parents get this house they are wanting i will definitly get the RX7 but if they dont get the house i will get a 240sx s13 fastback (90-94) or a MK3 supra thanks for all the advise.

This is certainly not to brag, but I make almost three times what you do per hour and I work full time. Even at that rate, a car can be hard to afford...and specially an FC. If you want a car and you have to pay for it, get a honda IMHO. You will at least be able to get a cheap car that will last a few years till you can afford one that you want to put more money into. Don't forget to factor insurance into your budget too.

those cars are going to break too.
RX-7s are fine if you get an 86-88 N/A w/ about 150k miles that has been taken care of. I've had no major problmems with my N/A. But thats because it has been maintained. the keyt is the early life
also, before you buy, download a factory service manual, and check everything it says in the maintenance section on the car you are going to get.

Oh yeah, I love my car. But the thing is, I just got laid off my job, I made $6.50/hour at ACE Hardware. That was enough to keep my N/A maintained and insured with some left over. I've already fixed a lot of things. And today I did my first mod, I put in an FD alternator.

Here is a website I made about my car (I need to update it):

Hey, how did you paint your wipers and window seals to be like that. I'm planning to do the same thing to my car. How did you do your repair/rejuvination to these parts. Also what paint did you use (looks great). PM me, thanks.

Where is Langley Park? If it is anywhere that sees snow regularly, I would recommend against an RX-7 until you've gotten up a bit in the world and can afford a toy. I was 28 when I bought mine (though did have an SVT Contour at 23).

I got caught with Rex in a snowstorm, and believe me, it's not fun (and a convertible has more weight to keep it planted than a hatch).

I recommend something with FWD if you are in a snowy area.

Otherwise... do your parents know how much the insurance will be? Have they given you a limit?

Also, how much do you have saved? What other financial obligations are you going to have soon (college?) What financial obligations do your parents expect you to cover (clothes, spending money...)?

What are you car privileges now? If they have a car they pretty much let you drive when you need/want it, I would save your money. If you don't, and it's getting to be a strain to balance your transportation and theirs, it may be a necessity now.

i bought my first car when i was 16 (1990 toyota cresside), then when i about to turn 17 i bought my first fc (ive had 3, 2 n/a's and a turbo), it was good to me, its really up to you if you think you can handle the car or not (not only financially), right now im 18 and i drive a lexus sc400 (left the rotary world for a bit, but i will be back soon!)

btw, i bought all my cars, i work a job that pays me 14.75/hr but i only work 2 days a week. i do alot of things to make money outside of just working.

*edit* make sure you chose which car you buy very carefully, if that means you have to pay primo for a nice car to avoid all the small things to fix (that later become quite costly), that might be more worth it, don't expect to buy a FC for $1300 and have a perfect car that needs little work, remember to factor in how much fixing all the little things will cost before you make a purchase.

I think you should get it if you really want to work on it and ****. That's what I'm doing now. I'm 15 and I just bought my first FC. It hasn't given me ANY major problems yet. I did a complete tune up on it and it has 160k on the odometer. I paid 1900 for it and I'm in the process of getting it completely restored. It's going well. I suggest you think about what car you seriously want. I've been through like 3 cars now and before I got the FC I thought a lot about what car I really would like to hold on to. So after making money from buying and reselling these other 3 cars, I started with 900 and after those cars im up to 2100. I look for a FC and I finally find one that's pretty nice. Just make sure you get the right car because if you don't you'll regret buying it. My advice is to just wait until you find the perfect one and you've saved up enough. Good luck, bye.

Yes, but if you want a good dependable sports car in this class/time period, I'd reccommend either a 1989 and old Toyota MR2 or a 1992 and older Toyota Supra Turbo. I've had one of each and enjoyed them both very much....except for the clutch replacement in the MR2...$$$.

Good luck, and don't get in over your head.

To be more specific... My radiator cap on top of the thermostat was leaking coolant (very slowly) and it dripped onto my air pump wiring harness which had some (obviously) messed up wires in it.... I was in line for a run down the dragstrip in KansasCity and flames and smoke poured out of my engine bay! Yikes!
Cats were already clogged and old.... So straight pipe and emissions removal was the next obvious step!
Definatly a big scare though!
Happy it wasn't the PD!

I live near Bethesda in MD. Langley park pg county. but i dont think im gonna have the funds for this car. Around my way MS13 would prolly steal it anyway(even though im cool wit some of them). i think im jus gona have to get a 240sx s13 fastback or a MK3 supra. my brother had a 240 and through a rod through the block(because he was at 5000 miles from the last oil change) but besides his mistake it was a VERY reliable car.

Quick Reply: Do you think this would be a good car for me?
