Do silencers decrease performance?

since im thinking about the apexi n1 mufflers, and since everyone says they are SO loud, i realize i may put on the silencers...now it just seems logical to me that they would decrease performance at least a LITTLE since they are restricting the flow and the hole is smaller, but i thought i'd ask you guys....

anyone know?

i think it gives you more low end torque actually but less power at higher rpms.

i have no clue about n/a cars but i know it kills the **** out of the boost one my t2. Goes from 14-16 psi to maybe 3, and when you get into any boost at all it sounds like a expresso machine on crack.
Really the only scilencing it does is crusing around barely touching the gas at low rpm's

Yeah I have an N1 single on mine. I dunno about that 3psi though, I get about the same as without it (10-12 on ported motor, stock turbo) it just takes longer to build and the top end goes to ****. Makes power through redline when it's unrestricted though. Low end is marginally better with it, and it is way quiter. WOT does sound hideous compared to unrestricted.

Any portion of the exhaust that allows the gasses to expand or slow down will cause a retriction (mufflers of any kind, cats, bends, "Y"s, etc...). However with an NA car it won't hurt tremendously. As others have said, if it's a straight-through baffle-less design then it will do little more than bring your peak power down a little lower in the RPM.

there will be less over all however depending on the size of the silencer you may not notice it.
