Note that I got no really useable replies other than just wild guesses. I guess if the question were going to be answered, I would have answered it myself, as I seen to have seen inside more engines than just about anybody here (around 300 now, I guess).

I post questions every now and then, but as Jason says, its often easier just to look it up. I'll look it up first, then post if something is not clear.

Since I have been working on FCs since they came out new, its not often that there is something that I haven't tried of someone else has tried, unless its the seriouslly modified cars (which I tend to stay away from anyway).

i just thought that i would post this

A catalytic converter is a device that uses a catalyst to convert three harmful compounds in car exhaust into harmless compounds.

The three harmful compounds are:

Hydrocarbons (in the form of unburned gasoline)
Carbon monoxide (formed by the combustion of gasoline)
Nitrogen oxides (created when the heat in the engine forces nitrogen in the air to combine with oxygen)
Carbon monoxide is a poison for any air-breathing animal. Nitrogen oxides lead to smog and acid rain, and hydrocarbons produce smog.
In a catalytic converter, the catalyst (in the form of platinum and palladium) is coated onto a ceramic honeycomb or ceramic beads that are housed in a muffler-like package attached to the exhaust pipe. The catalyst helps to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. It converts the hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. It also converts the nitrogen oxides back into nitrogen and oxygen.

I know that HC's are elevated in non-cat exhaust systems.
So it's pure heat that surpresses the "high" HC?

the above post was so that you know your right ted

Seriously, the engine doesn't seal up until several THOUSAND miles after a rebuild, unless you're using really soft seals like Hurley or possibly Atkins.
If they are RA stuff, then I'm sure they compression is still rising.

You're getting blow-by from the decreased compression.
Put another 2,000 miles on the motor first before taking it back to smog!

not always, the cats a) like a slightly richer mixture b) the engine misfires more (at least in a no load test).

if the hc's are over 1000, its usually the acv not working that does it. the air pump air going to the exhaust ports is CRITICAL to the car passing, the more air you can get there the better.

living in california gets you familiar with the emissions system for whatever good that does.....

the seals are atkins, the rotor housings were in great condition, i premix so sealing properties are better than stock for compression and i need to get the car smogged before the end of next month. i don't think i can put 3k miles on it before then and personally i don't believe the readings will come down much after 1k miles is reached which i am close to now.

the precat was gone, hollow.. so to remedy this someone put on a second cat in the middle just past the downpipe flange, i don't think this cat is alive anymore either but i will have to check, the main cat seems to be working still due to the readings i got, at least one cat is still alive in the system though, which of the rear 2 i don't know. at any rate, i'm sure if i can find and put a precat on it the HC will come down quite a bit.

hmmmm... I figure I might as well jack this thread for a moment. I have about 750 mi. on a fresh rebuild/streetport (using Atkins seals) and I reused my 140k mi TII housings. My compression after running the car pretty hard for about 25 minutes were about 90 all around. Should I expect to remain at, or around these #'s forever? I did a test around 200 or so miles ago and netted nearly the same #'s...?
