Different OEM Thermostats?

Ever since I changed my thermostat (ordered from mazda) the system works as if there's no thermostat at all. Top hose gets warm way too soon, car takes forever to reach temp. It seems to me that the stat is a bit to small in the housing, water bypasses it, I believe.
Now, mazdatrix has two different part numbers, one for up to 88, then 89 and beyond. They do have different gaskets, the 89+ uses an 'O' ring. The 'O' ring came with my mazda thermostat, I had to go to a parts store and get the correct gasket for my 88 (TII conversion).

Anyone else run into this?

According to an email from mazdatrix, I do indeed have the wrong thermostat, so there does seem to be two different ones.
