Difference Between '89 & '91 ECU?
Right now I have an '89 GXL and a '91 GXL in my driveway, both of them with blown motors. I am trying to decide which one to turn into a daily driver and which one to pillage for an ITS race car.
Is there any performance difference between the '89 Engine management (ECU, Sensors, etc.) and the '91?

I would barley call an '89 model "early". I know there are significant differences between the '86-'88 and the '89-'91 ECU's. I need to know if there are any performance differences between an '89 and '91.
One source told me the '89 ECU _might_ be a bit better when it comes to performance because the only changes between those years were for emessions. The '91s were supposed to have slightly cleaner exhaust and to accomplish that Mazda had to tune down the ECU (by just a few HP that was made up with other modifications).
Can anyone confirm this?

NO but it makes sense. What I know is on my friends 91 ecu you can take out some emision stuff like those colored clutster of relays and get a engine check light. However the 89s like mine try it and you wont. So thier does seem to be a difference in emisions functions.

It might be possible but very minimal of a loss between the 2.
The guy from japan is talking about the fact that their cars were part of a year ahead of ours, so an 89 here is an 88 to them, and in that sense, the 88 and back ecu's were poor. BUt yeah, it doesnt matter, cause we're talking about NT's anyway which they enver had.
