Difference between 4 Puck 6 Puck Clutches

Ok this question has been bugging me for a while now..... What is the difference between 4 Puck, 6 Puck clutches? And what the hell is a Puck?

This should probably be in "general automotive" But a puck is a "pad" that makes the friction surface of the friction plate. As opposed to using an entire radius (see the stock clutch) the puck style clutch simply has 4 or 6 individual pads that make up the surface.

The difference between 4 and 6 puck? Holding capacity...........and the 6 puck will take less time to destroy your flywheel than a 4 puck

with the same pressure plate the 4 puck will have more pressure pre square inch = more holding power.

A 4 puck will grab alot harder than a 6 puck. Puck clutches are pretty unnecessary on the street

any Puck clutches are drag race territory...sure there's the argument that a puck type clutch will have less parascitic loss that a full face clutch, but its arguable.

Ive driven an N/A with a 6 puck (bought it that way) and its NO fun at all. After 10,000 km's of use my flywheel was pooched and un-useable afterwards. Wouldn't do that again.

So in short, there is no "better" one. Sure a 3 puck will lock up like a light switch when you pop the clutch.......but is your car for drag only? Do you stock flywheels for these cars?

I'm running an ACT 6-puck w/heavy duty pp & the pro-lite flywheel.
On a stock S5 engine and turbo....sure it takes a little getting use to but it’s not that bad on the street.

Also I don't daily drive it.

I just put a 4 puck in my RX-7. I haven't actually driven it yet. Of course, I'm building my 7 for road racing. I wouldn't recommend it for street driving. (Though I plan for my 7 to be street legal until I can get a tow vehicle and trailer.)

I recently got a 4 puck on mine, takes a bit of getting used to, but if you rev match when shifting it's not all that noticeable

Unless your dragging, all youll ever need is a good street strip clutch, no need for a pucked clutch

I just put a Sprung 6 puck on my s5 n/a. I have yet to drive it but from what ive read, it will just take a little getting used to and shouldn't be too bad due to the springs.

Not to steal your thread by any means, but i am in greeaaat need of help with my idle if anyone reads this. Car just stalls after warmed up. Received code 3 CAS G sensor. thread below

It may be driveable, but the point is, is that its overkill for 90% of the people here. It will also wear parts faster (being itself and flywheel) Unless your making 350+hp and drag quite often, there shouldnt be a need for a pucked clutch. Can you use one ok and daily drive it? Sure, but why

I bought my T2 with a racing beat 6 puck already in it. Damn that thing grabbed with little effort and was fun to drive......but upon taking it off I saw the damage. I loved the feel but I can't afford to keep replacing clutches and flywheels.

My 86' N/A with Turbo Trans and Diff came with a 3 Puck and heavy duty Pressure Plate. It was great for Auto X/ "Drift.''

ok these are not nessecarily for RX7 but the disc will still be similiar for this question

Continuous disc (stock disc looks like)

6 puk disc (harsh engagement normally for track use)

4puk clutch VERY harsh engagement only track use

3 puk clutch (why bother)

the idea would be a continuous disc with either cryo treating or a ceramic compound would give a better feel for the street and still handle the abuse if u had a stiffer pressure plate!
