dial caliper and indicator accuracy?

dial caliper and indicator accuracy?

Would a dial caliper and dial indicator that reads to 0.001 inches be good enough to use in the inspection of parts for a rebuild?

Yes, your not going to find specs more then .001 and you'd be hard pressed and spend LOTSA money on a caliper or dial indicator that reads past 1,000th of an inch (BTW, 0.001 is one thousand of an inch). A straight edge would be another good tool to have amongst other tools to have.

Remember, just because it's got 1 thou PRECISION, doesn't mean it's ACCURATE to 1 thou. There was a good article in GRM a while ago about measurment devices and calibrating them. A guy built his motor and it killed itself shortly afterwards due to his dial caliper amongst other measurement tools, being innaccurate.
