I seriously doubt it. It says to use 92 on the gas filler cap too. My 10th AE was bought at Campbell Mazda in Costa Mesa, CA so definitely not Euro spec or anything. Maybe it was a California only thing or something?

My '88 owners manual says on page 1-4:
"Your new Mazda is designed to obtain maximum performance with UNLEADED GASOLINE with an octane rating of 87 or higher (average of Research Octane Number and Motor Octane Number). Octane Rating is required to be posted on the pumps of gas stations by federal law in the United States. Unleaded gasoline will minimize exhaust emissions and spark plug fouling.
"NEVER USE LEADED GASOLINE. Never add any fuel system cleaning agents to the fuel tank other than Mazda specified or equivalent. (Consult your Authorized Mazda Dealer for details.) Use of leaded gasoline is detrimental to the catalytic converter.
"Gasohol, a mixture of gasoline and ethanol (also known as grain alcohol), and gasoline or gasohol containing methanol (also known as wood alcohol) are being marketed in various places in the country along with or instead of leaded or unleaded gasoline. You are requested not to use gasohol containing more than 10% ethanol, or any gasoline or gasohol containing methanol as the fuel for your Mazda, because the use of such fuel may cause problems in driveability and damage to the fuel system. Discontinue using gasohol when driveability problems occur, even if the gasohol contains less than 10% ethanol.
"Damage to or driveability problems with your Mazda resulting from the use of
1) gasohol containing more than 10% ethanol, or
2) gasoline or gasohol containing methanol, or
3) leaded gasoline or leaded gasohol
may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty applicable to your Mazda."
I'll keep using 87 octane in my vert, don't want to void that warranty...

Cooler the engine the more tuning and the harder you can push. As said in the article above thats what i ment by more power =]

Top Down, Boost Up

It sounds like something rattling somewhere on the car to me. Detonation at 3 inHg (1.5 psi) and low load should require something serious like a CAS majorly advanced. The only time I've heard detonation was at WOT and ~10 psi with way too little fuel, and it was in sync with the engine. As RPMs went up, the pinging noises got more frequent.
