Lightbulb Dash Painting

I have a question on this. Has anyone Painted a 2nd Gen Dash? If so what did you use? Also how did you prep it for the work? I'm interested in painting my dash black.

If you have any pictures what so every please post them.

I imagine someone has painted their dash, and they used paint. They probably sanded off the old paint then painted on new color. Maybe a little searching might help?

couple different ways to go...

lots of places make paint thats "vinyl die" so it actually stains your dash vinyl (great if your going blue/red to black---but not the other way around)

if your going to use paint Krylon(carried at walmart) has a line called Fusion that adheres to plastics very well.. just make sure you give it a ton of time to sit (it says 24 hours but if you let it sit for a few days/week its almost un"flake"able

The only thing I have to say about that. Is The dash is plastic with vinyl on top. The kyrlon paint like you said is for plastic not for vinyl. It wouldn't flex with the vinyl it will just crack and peel.

If I loose my license for a few months (which I probably will), I plan on painting my dash, door panel tops, and anything above that line black like a lot of today's new cars. So far I found these threads in the FB section, which goes over pretty much what you're asking for.

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/had-do-another-tan-interior-going-painted-644819/
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...t=dash+removal
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/usage-rit-liquid-dye-color-changing-652553/

And here's something I found about removing the FC dash...
9 bolts + 2 screws total. 2 bolts on each side by the door hinges, 3 bolts on top under the dash vent piece that has one screw in the center, then just pops off, 2 at each side of the transmission tunnel under the kick panels, 2 more that hold up the steering wheel assy. and 2 screws under the center console... that’s it.
Hope this helps, and good luck.
You'll have to fill me in on your results

I would sand the area and than wipe it down with denatured alcohol, and I havent't used it yet but sounds like the best stuff for what your trying to accomplish here is a link to Krylon Fusion web site. http://www.krylon.com/main/product_t...roduct_details

Let me know how that works

I would personally rub the dash-surface with a rough scotch-brite pad, clean it thoroughly with wax and grease remover and then spray it with 2-3 light-medium coats of Bulldog adhesive promoter, then 5-6 coats of black Duplicolor vinyl and carpet paint/dye (it's no dye--neither is the other stuff).

Wait approx. 15 minutes between coats--starting light and then several medium coats. I'd let it dry for a day before installing it.

Dash question...

Kinda off topic but, how do you remove the carpet from under the dash behind the center console...I just cut mine out it was so horrible... Curious since you are doing something like this..
and yes Paint = bad

Dye = GOOD.

Just remember to tape off anything you dont want dyed, cuz it dont come out so well.. carpet especially But if your taking dash out no probs

GOOD luck post pics!

Umm that was a little tricky. My friend is me took us like 5 to 10 minutes to get it out. But I had the dash out, the heater core and blower motor out. There is a piece of velcrow on top hill of the transmission part.lol. it is under the heater core I think. But you have to try your best.

Now for something I was going to ask. How do you get the top of the dash off. There is one little screw but the area is to small for a screw driver to get in there.

Off the meds for the New Year?

Try to:

A.) Not shout.
B.) Work on your reading comprehension skills.
C.) Link to a product that is available in the US.

eriksseven gave good information in the thread above. The Duplicolor material is very very good. I have used it with great results. And you can get it in the US.

BTW, for the benefit of the thread, always use the grease and wax remover before sanding or scuffing. If you sand first, any residual wax, silicones etc may be embedded into the sanding scratches and then not be fully removed by the grease and wax remover. This is the same principal as when you are doing body work on the exterior paint.

or hell, ive seen people take the body of the dash off, down to the bare shell (either plastic or metal) and build it back up from there. if you are good with fiberglass, then that might be a good option.
just my .2c

I am not off my meds, I was never on meds, what I need are no more people posting about **** that they have absolutely zero experience with to try to make their E-go's a little bigger. Have you ever dyed a 15 yo blue interior black? Have you ever painted a plastic trim piece? If the answer to either of those questions is "No," as I suspect they are because you obviously have no clue what you are talking about - STFU becuase I've done both. There is a good possibility that I am one of the most **** retentive people you will ever meet when it comes to fit an finsh. You do not sand or scuff vinyl - are you on meds? Try again. No - nevermind - don't even bother - you're suggesting painting vinyl which is just a ridiculous waste of time.
Oh - as for a product only available outside the US - again - STFU if you have no actual knowledge-

Good results huh...... got some pics? I have PLENTY of pics of some really nasty faded blue vinyl pieces that I dyed with that exact product about 5 years ago. I'm quite proud as a matter of fact.

So umm..... do you like my door panels? The vinyl top and arm rest were originally blue. I like them. I think that looks a little better.... ok ALOT better than PAINT!

Go ahead an paint them, then post pics. Then be a man and admit that you're wrong please.

Why would you need fiberglass? If the vinyl is silly faded and nasty and you could find an appropriate "cushion layer" than I think it would be really.... REALLY nice to recover it in leather. I plan on building a custom fiberglass dash using the original as a starting point so there will obviously be alot of cutting and glassing involved. When I'm done I want to recover it in vinyl or leather.

However, if you are only trying to change the COLOR or an original dash - the VHT product (which is available to your door withing 48 hours ) I don't think can be beat and I tried a few things. I always had the common sense to not PAINT vinyl though.

that is really good picture I have to admit. Great work with that kind of paint. I used to have a piston engine and I always get great parts from summit. They never sell bad stuff.

Summit sells plenty of crap.

It's not a paint - it's a dye. They are very different. That little can is awesome where if you tried to paint your vinyl you'd more than likely ruin it.

Pics of what? what it looked like before hand? No sorry - I converted everything to black (now that I'm thinking about it it was more like 7 years ago) and there was no such thing as a digital camera back then. I have those pics becuase I did the fiberglass door panels ~ 3years ago.

There's nothing to it really. Read the "destructions" and have at it. For aerosol cans like that I have one of those plastic trigger handles. I feel it just makes things much much easier to control. Mask off where you don't want the dye and go to town. Cool areas out of sunlight or moisture and you should be good.

EDIT - make sure it is very very clean though. I remember laying down a few light "coats" if you will and it being rather blotchy as the other areas where dryer than others. I actually ahd faith in the destructions though and followed through with 5?? maybe??? coats to get everything uniform. It's not like brushing paint on

On some I believe it may. I never tried it though becuase I heard that it sometimes bleeds back if used on cloth/carpet. I believe VHT has a product specific to that type of materual though
