Damn I miss that place!
It probably is not the good section to post it, but I don't really mind since I always posted in the 2nd Gen section and it probably is my last post over here. That would be great if you could let it here.
I just sold my FC. I've got two kids, I almost didn't use the car anymore and it was less than convenient for the family. So I went the wise way and sold it.
That means I am now looking for a fun two drive 4-5 seater. I've mostly been on Impreza forums, and let me tell you there's is nothing like rx7club.com. Whenever I was looking for something overhere, the search function found it. When I couldn't find what I was looking for, there was always someone able to give me a hand. I've got the feeling I'll never find a forum as complete and as welcoming as rx7club.com.
By the way, any idea on a ~$6000 fun to drive 4 door car?
Long live to the rotaries!

He had a highly modified FD, single turbo, haltec, everything you could imagine, even ceramic seals, and he thought that car was unreliable. His audi is now beating it.

1997-2003 BMW 540i. BMW + V8 + big back seat. What's not to love? There's a couple up on craigslist for 7K OBO, I'm sure you could talk them down to 6K.
BMW 7 series. Much cheaper than the 5-series, but only available with an auto. Hey, it was the car from "The Transporter". That makes it cool in my book.
Subaru Wagons (Outback, legacy, etc). Dunno if you have anything against wagons, but I love them. I've seen a friend of mine take his old subaru places you wouldn't expect.
Pickup Truck. Practical in just about every way except gas mileage.
4Runner. Try to kill them. Just try. These suckers will idle with a hole in the block!
BMW 3-series. Everyone wants the 2-door versions, so the 4-doors go for cheap!
Subaru Impreza RS. Find an automatic. It's not the WRX, so it's not as desirable. And the auto makes it cheaper.
90s Mercedes. They're heavy, but super comfortable, and the leather seats mean cleaning up spills is easy!
E30. The earlier BMWs have a record for being quite reliable, and for your price, you could get one in GREAT condition.
Lincoln Towncar. Never in my life have I ridden in a more comfortable vehicle. They're floaty boats, but that V8 can be made to sing if you were so inclined.
60s Mustang Coupe. Everyone wants the fastbacks, which makes the coupes a great deal. For 6K you can get a rust-free muscle car. Just be wary of their faults (60s brakes, prone to rust, attracts cops) For that matter, most muscle cars with a few faults can be found in your price range. My friend picked up a '71 Charger for $700. If he had $5300 to put into it, it could have been a show stopper!
90s Mustang. I hate 'em personally, but if you want a fun, cheap car, they do fit the bill. In your price range you can get a stick or auto, convertible or coupe, v6 or v8. The downside is that the back seat is pretty small, so if your kids aren't that young, it may not work for you.
If I were in your position, personally, I would look for a late 90s BMW 3 or 5 series. They're fun, they have 4 doors, and they can be good on gas depending on what you get.

Anything BMW or Mercedes can be nice, but remember parts & repairs can be costly. Boosted Hondas I don't see as being a good family car, trust me I have two kids. 6K is going shorten the list alot. The older Subaru route or a Mitsubishi Galant VR4, I would lean towards the VR4.
I mean you can't go wrong 4 doors, AWD, a factory turbo car, strong aftermarket support, easy to mantain & look pretty good. Happy shopping!

I know a guy here in Dallas selling a mint mercedes benz sports car (don't remember the model, but he is a good customer of mine). Its a 1994 2 door hard top convertible for only 8K. Badass 2 door v8 and looks imaculate.

Still say a 1987 to 1992 Galant VR-4 would be a fun car to have that will provide room for the family. With his budget of 6k he could find a nice one with some mods already or stock & have some cash to do his own mods.

Wow, thanks for all the input! I looked at BMWs, Audi's and Lexus, but maintening cost is something that drives me away from them. My girlfriend and I are still students so our incomes are kind of limited.
I think my best bet is an impreza, TS or RS. Plus AWD are always a nice thing in Canada. VR-4 would be great but there are pretty non-existent overhere.
Thanks guys! You're exactly why I'll miss that place!

Mazda Protege5. I'm looking at getting one as a daily run-around car. Super reliable and great fun to drive (so I hear), good looks, good mpg. They are a little down on power, but you had an FC so it shouldn't be too bad.
I've never heard anything bad said about it. In fact, people like them so much that it's hard to find any for sale (at least around where I live).

Too old for this

I second the Protege5. It handles remarkably well for a larger car. The manual-mode auto trans in the later models is tolerable, even to someone who swore he would never drive an auto.
