Custom exhaust.

The racing beat exhaust and headers go for $1,200 and that's sorta out of my budget. The Corksport single is around $450 but I want a dual out. So I was wondering if I got an exhaust made what would be the best sizes for piping from the cat back? Would the car be unbearable to live with if it was just piping from the headers back? No mufflers, resonators or cats. I've searched forums and videos but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Most aftermarket exhausts come with idiotic 4-4.5" exhaust tips. I want something like 3".

In short, what's the best piping size for a '91 N/A. Videos and pictures are welcome!

If it's an n/a, then you'll definitely want some restriction like a cat in order to provide back pressure for your aux ports to function properly...assuming yours are.

the stock Fc exhaust is 50mm ID into 2x38(i think)mm ID pipe.

if you did 2.5" into 2x2.25" that would be about right.

I can always leave the cat on. I'm not looking for huge horsepower gains, I want something that will sound nice, reasonably loud and look good from the back.

That's what I was thinking. I may even buy mufflers. Could go straight pipe from cat and if it's too obnoxious buy two mufflers and weld them on.

S5 uses the air pump for aux ports.

OP, Check my part out thread linked in my signature. Buy the Road Race RB header I have, make an exhaust from that.

You definately want mufflers.

I have seen a few youtube videos, but videos never do anything justice. I know that in real life it'll be a lot louder. I'll be owning probably the only FC Rx7 in my town.

i had a racing beat road race header and presilencer on my s4 n/a and then straight piped to some cheap fart cans, sounded decent. removed the presilencor for speed bump clearance and had it straight back to mufflers and sounded horrible, tried a couple different types of resonators and it still sounded horrible. racing beat collector header and presilencor on my 84 gsl-se straight back to a fart can at one time and a generic flowmaster style muffler later on, both sounded great. just had my turbo exhaust made today using rb down pipe and presilencor to a dc sport muffler (all 3") sounds amazing.

anywho what im getting at is at least spring for the presilencor to go with the header and you will save yourself a bunch of trouble and headache, literally.

you will at a minimum want a resonator and straight through mufflers if your worried about how it sounds. without mufflers its like..... its not like anything its just realy realy loud.

I took my racing beat tip off just to hear my car without it(I have an sdj header, straight 2.5" pipe back to a racin beat tip) and it was louder than a mustang 5.0 with headers, test pipe, and exhaust. My car is streetported.. and 2.5" piping seems to be the norm.

But for suuure you need a resonator.. a regular exhaust tip won't hold much back. RadioX7 has two resonators on his straight pipe set-up and its still pretty loud.. hell even my quiet *** racing beat tip gets loud as a ************ when the throttle is wide open

At one point I ended up with a RB header, gutted cats and a cheapie fart can with the packing blown out... pretty much straight pipe. Sounds like **** turned up all the way to 11and your power output will be f****d. Run a good resonator (RB or steel wool packed custom) at least. Even better, run two cheap cats immediately after the header. Then you can run a larger catback pipe for deeper tone to a fart cannon with a smaller exit to add a bit more backpressure and meet your aesthetic requirements. Just keep in mind that even if you're lucky like me, a cheap fiberglass packed fart cannon will only last a handfull of months.

by the time you buy mufflers, buy tips, have custom made you may not end up far off from a bolt on system. Do they still sell dynomax or borla exhaust for the FC?

I have an 86 na with full custom exhaust, magnaflow cans, and an unknown resonator that was laying around. Sounds pretty good, little loud in the cabin but much better than without. I don't have true duals though so I can't comment on that. I could grab some pictures if you're interested. Has 3" header back and y pipe to 2.5. Couldn't justify the incredibly expensive racing beat either.

My friend is getting an exhaust made for his 04 Ranger. It's gonna cost him 400 bucks for labor and piping and then he supplies the muffler (cost him 90 bucks with shipping). he's doing 2.5 in and 2.5 out from the cat back. I can't see having one extra muffler costing me that much more. But he's getting aluminum piping, which I'm assuming is cheaper than stainless steel.

Any money saved is better than nothing. I'm a college student so I'd prefer not to spend a month's worth of work on an exhaust.

Sometimes a custom exhaust is a pain, rattles here, rubs there.
Choose a good shop but if your buddy is paying $400 in single exhaust alum i say stainless dual might be closer to 600, now add 2 mufflers to the equation.

The exhaust on it right now is apparently a custom job as well. It's not loud at all, but it's not OEM. I forget where he got it done. To get a bit more sound, could I get a header or gut the mufflers or resonator? Something cheap I could do to get a bit more sound out of it.

If all you want is sound try removing or gutting the resonator, you really cant lose too much trying

^ yes, unless you actually think a tip(shiny piece of chrome sold at autoparts stores that you just attach to the spout of a muffler) does something...

You might be able to get a custom dual setup for $600 if you source and build it yourself. I just built my own single catback over Memorial Day weekend, and with parts it was just over $700. It's all 304ss aside from the cat and hangers, which are 409ss. I'm running a Magnaflow cat into a Borla XR-1 and a Racing Beat rear muffler, so noise should be tolerable when cruising down the highway on road trips.
