The countless cutoffs have come to an end (long)

As you all probably remember, I was having severe cutoff problems with my car about 2 months ago. I riped things out, baindaided things up, reground every component on the entire car and did countless tune up procedures and I just could not fix the problem. Why was I hitting this sort of rev limiting with my car?

I pulled the ECU and found bad resisters, all of which were fixed. I thought the problem was gone, untill I took my car autocrossing. Man I was so pissed at my car for freaking cutting all over the parking lot.

I felt like beating my car up. it was being a dirty *****. Why do you gotta be like that your whole life? I asked, and a flame out the exhaust was the responce.

hmm... a flame??? wait. that means I am not hitting fuel cut. Wait a minute... My a/f guage is reading 7 bars while Im on this cutoff mode. Hmm... the Apexi SAFC was peaking at 62.5% afm at an rpm of 5300. That was the cutoff point but why? Everytime I hit 62.5% afm on the safc my car would sort of lock up until I let off. it wouldnt even come back to life untill I released the pedal.

So I thought it was grounds and spark. Today I got zapped a few times by the leading coil, then I wore a glove and checked spark on all the coils. It cools so cool; pop off a wire right at the coil while the car is running and you can make a spark about an inch long (good test for coils). So my coils were OK.

My buddies over at MIRC were frantically putting me through tests, untill one anonymous person told me to get an intake system or modify my air box. Hmm.. that got me thinking.

So I started ripping my intake out, and the entire TID. OH MY GAWD!!!!! the lower half of my TID was replaced by myself about 6 months ago. I bought a cheap rubber 90 degree 2" hose from the hardware store. Dammit!! the soft rubber was choaking the engine!! it was completely colapsing! Amazing how it was only colapsing at 62.5% airflow. Man do I feel stupid. To wrap this up I replaced the soft rubber hose with a plastic one for the time being, and my car no longer hits this rev limit at 5300 @ 62.5% afm.

If you replaced your lower tid with a soft rubber hose from the hardware store, get that thing out of there! its choaking your engine!!

Thank you all so much for helping me the past two months! Man do I feel stupid.

Weird that the cutoff only happened in those specific conditions.

Hmm...

You should be very careful when messing with those coils. There is enough electricity coming out of those to do some damage.

My leading coil arced at least 4 inches before I dropped the towel wrapped around my hand and jerked my arm out from underneath the hood of the car. After seeing the length and intensity of that spark, I had no doubt in my mind that the stock ignition system was more than adequate for NA cars.
