Counterweights & Flywheels
Well, I know this topic has been covered a few times and I have searched but the answers appeared to be somewhat inconclusive.
First the scenerio: I have a 87NA engine and driveline (MT). The engine I have is a 88 T2 auto. Ive been preparing for the swap for almost 6 weeks now, and with the day of the swap just next sunday the idea of the flywheel and counterweight reoccured. I've also spoken to a few different people and recieved as what I interpreted to be different messages.
I've heard that flywheels within series are interchangable but the counterweights are different. At this point, I dont think I can use the stock NA flywheel. I believe I have to use a aftermarket NA flywheel and use the auto T2 counterweights or something of that sort? Id appreciate some help, esp those who have done the swap themselves. Thanks in advance.

You are using the NA tranny right?, then yes use a aftermarket NA flywheel and the T2 counterweight.
BTW: I heard you can order just the flywheel from Mazdatrix or RB and save quite a bit of money since you already have the counter weight. You'll have to call them though.

You know, I have been trying to figure this out for a while and it always seems to be confusing but I think I figured it out
They need to match I know it sounds dumb but I had this problem with my Cosmo motor. Basically you want the front to match the rear so...
Cosmo auto rear and cosmo front = ok with light flywheel
89NA auto rear with 89NA front = ok with light flywheel
88T2 auto rear with 88T2 front = ok with light flywheel
So you can't use the stock NA flywheel with your auto engine because the weights are wrong.

The stock flywheels have the counterweight built into them. If you are going to put a t2 motor in the car you will need one of two things. Either the stock t2 flywheel for the year of the motor OR a lightweight flywheel and the automatic counter weight that matches the year of the motor. The flywheel has to match the motor.

If the rotors are weighted them same for S4 T2 and NA, then why would the counterweights between them be different? What would keep me from using my stock NA flywheel on the T2 motor?

I have this site on my hard drive.... http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7parts.htm
and I double checked and sure enough the front counterweights are the same on a turbo as a N/T.
Part number N326-11-061A.
I DID NOT look up the weight for the flywheel. More or less figured if the front are the same, then the rear are the same. That was for a 86-88 model. One has to look for himself for different models. See page 1-I3 and 1-J3 of the 86-88 Engine.

blah, just spring for the RB alum. flywheel. I just bought mine, fact it should be in transit right now. $370 or something w/o the counterweight + a few bucks for the hardware. All told, should be right at $400 or less if you don't need the counterweight. I'm going to pet mine for a few hours after it arrives. Such a shame to put that beautiful peice where it can't be seen.

I think you can use your NA flywheel, Mazdatrix only offers one rear counterweight for S4's, it must mean the weighting of the rotors is the same, even thought the weight is different. You are using your NA tranny also correct?
Sell me the counterweight. Ill give you $50 shipped for it.

Well since im still in the process of doing this engine swap, I dont wanna spend money needlessly, esp. if the NA driveline wont last. $310 is a lot of money saved to put towards something else if theres a problem with this swap.

Conflicting reports on strength of NA driveline. Will definitely blow the clutch quickly, so upgrade that. But have heard of quite a few guys running pretty decent HP numbers and have not killed their NA tranny yet -- I hope to add my name to that list. If you're staying near stock on the T2 motor, I think you'll be fine.
Besides, I don't think you'd have any trouble selling a lightweight flywheel around here if you did have to upgrade eventually. Not my decision and definitely not my money, but this is what I'd recommend.

Yea, I would like to find out on my own how long it'll last but would probably rather hang on to the cash for now as I dont think power is going to be an issue with the setup. I do have a brand new RB HD clutch and PP with all bearings ready to go.
Has ANYONE used their NA flywheel on the NA driveline for a T2 motor?
