cost to rebuild t2 engine
so i bough my 1st rx7 t2 with blow engine(smokes alot so i guess the oil seals are gone)
so i want to ask here whats the cost to rebuild the engine and whats the best/cheap shop to do it. one of my friends tells me to just buy a imported one from japan for $1600 with 20k-35k miles, but i think is better to rebuild it wit new seals and do street port on the way.
btw im in los angeles
thanks
alex

RR rebuilds them for about a grand, I think. Just got to get it there and back.
Don't buy a JDM motor, they are hit and miss. You could spend all that money, drop it in, and blow a seal the next day. You never know with them. With a rebuilt motor, you know that everything is new and good to go.

If i were you....just do it yourself. I just finished my rebuild.....and it was the most amazing feeling after i finished and started it up. Seriously I took my time, asked lots of questions, did a **** load of research and in the end everything worked out great. Make sure if you dont know how to check the specs on the housings (both iron and rotor) to have someone check em. as far as the rotors are concerned you wanna take an apex seal that you remove from the rotor and run it throught the grooves to make sure nothing catches. Also look for chips anywhere on the rotor and if the bearing is copper color replace it.
What i did was i replaced mostly everything. All o-rings and water jacket seals. Fc3spro (rted website has a complete list of what he used) I went along those lines and used everything except for the apex seals. He recommends Mazda Two piece seals but i used Rotary Aviation Classic seals (bout 100 dollars cheaper or so). If you have the money to go Mazda 2 piece do it. The water jacket seal is the most important part. Use mazda oem outer water jacket but use the mcmaster - carr part for the inner jacket seal. They are teflon encapsulated and can stand up to a bit more heat than the Oem ones can.
Next is cleaning....I spent about a day to throughly clean every inch. I mean THROUGHLY. if you dont seals wont set properly, and you have issues with coolant internally leaking or oil. Make sure all the carbon is cleaned from the grooves. Make sure the rotors are cleaned no carbon wat so ever, make sure the grooves where the oil seals sit are cleaned as well.
To Rebuild the motor, I recommend buying Atkins Rotary Video...its 25 dollars plus 10 dollars shipping and Its the best instructions I've ever used. Just follow it second by second, minute by minute, and if you dont understand something you can call Dan at Atkins Rotary and he will clarify no questions ask. Make sure you set the seals properly make sure everything in its place goes there. And Quadruple check your work before you go to the next step and you should have no problems. Also.....Torquing the motor down is a big issue. Follow the FSM directions for that. Hand tight all the way in the order they give you, then half turn, Quarter turn, then torque down.
Alright my hands are tired, I hope the information I gave you is enough to get you do all this. If not then sure Rotary Resurrection can rebuild for yah. for about 1400 like you said not including freight shipping which is like 300 round trip guesstimating. Well Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Just remember, if you do it yourself make sure you set aside tons of time to properly sit down and tackle it. Cause it doesnt take alot of time to rebuild but cleaning is the issue that causes alot of peoples problems. CLEAN THROUGHLY and youll be alright.
