coolant leaking from the weep hole

I just finished rebuilding my engine and installing it. So then I go to fill it up with coolant and it starts leaking from the water pump. I grabbed a mirror and saw that it was leaking from the weep hole. From what I understand this usually means the water pump has lost its internal seal, correct? What gets me is that the water pump was fine before I started my rebuild, and now (4 months later) it is leaking from the weep hole. So did the water pump seals go bad just while it was sitting around? Do I need to get a new water pump??

thanks,
-kevino

I would definatly get a new pump. If you let things dry for four months you would expect the seals to go bad.

Yes, you need a new pump, unless you want to replace the engine soon.

A new engine should get a new pump anyway. Its cheap insurance. I hope you had the injectors done also.

Yes, the seals could have dried out a bit while sitting for 4 months. Time for a new or rebuilt pump, because if it's leaking while not rotating, it's really gonna **** when you start her up....

If you're adventurous, they can be rebuilt with the right tooling & parts...

ok, thanks for the input. Does anyone know what a rebuilt water pump will cost? $150 without the core charge?

By the way when I order a new water pump, does it come with the housing and all? Or is it just the guts? I forget what the pump looks like inside; isn't the pump itself just the front part and then the rest is just the casing?

Smile Aftermarket water pumps are cheap

Check local auto parts store, Kragen, Checker, ect..., new or rebuilt water pumps are fairly cheap, generally under $50. If you've had a lot of miles on the engine, check the housing while you've got the water pump off. If you've got noticible erosion iside they can be repaired using marine epoxy. Do search someone just refered to their own repair of a housing long time ago still in good service
Good Luck

Water pumps that have been used (i.e. exposed to coolant) tend to kill their internal seal if the water pump is pulled and left dry.
This happens a lot in rebuilds when the water pump is left lying around for more than a week.
