Completed the 5 speed swap but...

Alright it has been a while (2 months) since i got to drive my rex, but now that i have finished the swap it is a totally different car, i love it even more now, there are a few problems with it though

1. the meter fuse keeps blowing, it controls all the gauges except the speedometer, and the logicon does not work when it is blown either, what could be causing this?

2. MY head unit will randomly go off and on, it is not the ground because all the statinons that i set are still there and the time is still right, it worked fine before the swap, could it be the head unit it self or is it somthign different

Thanks
Dan

You have a short somewhere. Probably behind the radio/head unit.

You did the swap, so are you sure you don't have any exposed wires that you spliced durring the swap?

What were they?

I would say that you would have had to mess with connectors that were once occupied by the Auto to integrate them into your manual set up.

Did you end up splicing in wires to places other than the Ing system on the steering column?

I did this swap so let me know what I can help you with.

the only wires that i have spliced was the ignition wires to go to the starter. the wires that used to go to the auto shifter surround i just cut then taped, could that be the problem? how would you integrate those wires in to the manual set up

thanks

Doubt it. But on the other hand, are you sure they're taped off and unexposed?

If those are the wires for the overdirve etc, you wouldn't adapt them.

Did you install any stereo or mess with any wires from the center console? When you installed the tranny and first started her up did your fry the ground on the firewall?

As an after thought, I think the harness that comes to your gages is the harness that you would have messed around with while doing the swap. I'm not at home right now so I can't confirm that first hand but I'm pretty sure...

No i didnt touch the stereo, but i had subs and an amp but it got stolen in the process, and all of the wires were cut, and there is still power going to them, Im pretty sure that the ground on the firewall is fine it looks normal

I just went outside took the power for the subs off the battery, changed the meter fuse, it worked for awhile then i got on the gas and the gauges died, the radio was on for awhile then it would turn off i thikn that it could be a loose wire somewhere.

You got some kinda chupracabre or somethin' going on back there...car theft people can really F-S-U

But while you're at it check to make sure that the wires you spliced to the manual (ing specifically) are not exposed and shorting. I'm pretty sure these wires are on the same harness that your gages ride on. Did you do any work in this area where you could have effected this harness besides doing the swap?

I dont think that the ign wire is exposed i wrapped that pretty good with tape but ill check under there maybe i knocked somthing loose, also i never wired up the reverse lights, i dont think that this would have anything to do with it

....took the power for the subs off the battery. it worked for awhile then i got on the gas and the gauges died,

Well, here's a thought on that one. If the power that wasn't taken care of for the subs etc and were flopping around, could it be that this caused damaging feed back to the alternator?

Since it idles...or does it?

If it idles, and you hit the gas there will be a surge in electric current (normally) because the engine is supplying more RPM's to the alternator. Granted the Alt is belt driven......So if you're experiencing the engine dieing when you're pressing the gas, something is not compensating for the extra electricity being supplied.

I believe, but I'm not completely sure how, that the alternator circuit has some kind of voltage regulator. Since the ECU is a digital system it has to maintain a certain voltage continously (usually digital is: +5V, - 5V) to communicate the electrical signals to everything else digitally hooked up to it.

So, my question would be: Could your alternator be freaking out because it was exposed to a short caused in the R.I.P. stereo system you once had?

also i never wired up the reverse lights, i dont think that this would have anything to do with it

I don't think so either.
