cold engine idle
ok when my 7 is cold and i drive to work, the idle is usually at around 2.5 to 3k, it stays there for a few min, like half way sometimes others not so long, when it has the high idle i smell fuel, like the engine is runnying really really rich and this thing burns fuel quick too, well i think my first 7 here, 100 to 120 miles per 3/4 tank, to 7/8 tank, so a guy at work (with a honda) told me it could be the air intake temp sensor, but i figured i would come on here and see if anyone had any input on it, also i get a little drop of power around 6k when accellerating hard then it kicks back in at like 6.2, RPM may be off a little on that but around that rpm, thanks for any help,

Its supposed to idle high for the first few minutes to warm up the cats faster. Its part of the cold start system and emissions system. It should be at like 3000 for maybe a minute or 30 seconds, then it should drop to 1500 after that, when its finally warmed up you should be idling at ~850

check on Aaron cakes site for how the car should start on cold start and about the aws (automatic warm up system)
Startup
Put car in neutral (or park for automatics), push the accelerator 1/4 down, then start the car. Release the accelerator when the car starts. If the cold start system is working perfectly, the engine should shoot to 3000 RPM for about 10 seconds, then come back down to around 1500 RPM, then slowly to an idle of 750 RPM as it warms up. If this does not happen, don't worry about it. The cold start system is a bad thing anyway. Allow the car to idle for about a minute, then drive off. -- off of Aaron cakes site

i have 60 k on the car, so the cold start system, that makes sense, but why does it only smell like its running rich when its cold is that just b/c it is idling so high? i mean that would make sense, what do you guys get for gas mileage though, like i said i get about 100 to 130 or so to almost a full tank, don't know if that is normal or bad, it lasts me about a week and its alot of stop and go to work somedays depending what time i leave

I just put in a full tank and got 235 miles just city driving and going up to 3k to shift in all gears. I dont know if it that is bad or not but it's fine for me. and my trip to work is about 17 miles round trip.

if I rember correctley Aaron said that there is no need to warm up a car because it is just waisting gas because it is just sitting there not moving. but I always let my car warm up for like 2-3 minites before going any where.

i usually let mine run for about a minute or so and then take off. in the winter though i have been known to leave it running for like 15 to 20 mins just so i dont get into a cold car. really destroys my mpg but hey for comfort and the kind of car we all drive whos counting anyway...
