clutch / transmission noises and can't get into gear sometimes
Wonder if I could get some opinions on a couple of problems I've been having lately with my transmission.
Starting a few days ago I started hearing this very odd, metallic, sort of grinding sound when I had the clutch pushed in. My friend described it as "two pieces of crumbled up foil being rubbed together". The noise only occurred with the clutch pressed in, and not when the clutch was out / engaged.
Then not too long after that I was at a stop light and when the light turned, I pushed the clutch in and was unable to get into any gear. It felt like even with the clutch in, it was not disengaging and the clutch was still engaged.
Any idea on what it could be would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

could be the the pilot berring going, release berring, or a synchro is worn out would explain the crunchiness and then I'd check over the whole clutch system master cyl, slave cyl, and especially the clutch line for leakage

Look at the clutch master and slave first. Bleed the clutch. If the fluid has been in there a long time it collects moisture and when it gets hot you wind up with air in the system and less than full release. Also have someone else push the clutch all the way down while you watch the slave and see if the arm slowly pushes forward while the clutch is depressed. If it does either the master or the slave are leaking.

Mine did the same thing before the pilot bearing died completely.

New development: So at one point the noise stopped and the car seemed ok, but the clutch pedal felt weird. It didn't require as much effort to press-in, but it didn't feel like sloppy either. I was worried about clutch fluid and what not so I've been keeping an eye on that and it doesn't appear to be going down or anything. It actualy felt a little better, it engaged a bit sooner and quicker too.
Anyway, **** hit the fan again today when just as I was pulling into a metered parking spot it made some noise and I was unable to get into gear.
So I went and returned a textbook, came back, still unable to get into first. However I was able to get into reverse, though it made some noise and clunking, it seemed to reset the problem long enough for me to get moving, I had to do it a couple of more times at stop signs/lights to get home but thankfully it wasn't too far.
Any thoughts?

sound like the Pilot bearing is No good any more.What is happening is that the Engine is Locked to the Trans,Via that Bearing being Worn and not allowing the Trans to Go into "full neutral" position.That makes for Hard shifting Into First and Reverse.I would also check the Clutch Hydraulics,to see if the slave is Leaking at the Pin.(the Pin that goes onto the Clutch fork)
