clutch switch question

So I'm tracing down a stalling problem when I come to a stoplight, as well as in reverse backing out sometimes. I just noticed the clutch switch wasn't even hooked up, then there's a penny in place of a small rubber piece that separates the push rod piece of the clutch switch and the clutch itself. So I got another switch and plastic piece, but how far do I screw in the clutch switch? And does this affect the free-play of the clutch?

update to my problem is I am getting close. Put the newer switch in and set the freeplay to 1/8 inch on the clutch. The dashpot had a lil paint by the end of it so i scrubbed it clean and now it goes in slow and springs outward. I can still tell there is more tweaking to be done as when I let of the gas theres a slight pause before it decels. Im thinking the throttle cable is too tight. Someone please chime in before I mess with it. And yes Ive messed with it before lol.
