I second what templeswain says. I had the same problem that tonyge has, changed out the pilot bearing, and everything is fine now.

some whining is normal for the tranny..i have new pilot bearings and throw out bearing..and a good tranny..i really get none of the normal whining i was expecting..but eventually it will happen..and i wont worry about it....with the many 7s ive owned in the past.....this is the first to not really have any whining...but this is also the first s5 ive ever had..maybe that makes a difference? i beleive that it is different than most cars..cuz they have piston engines...that you shift at lower rpms..than you will for a rotary..my beliefs are that the bearings just make noise eventually cuz you shift them alot more often at higher rpms..think about when you shift your 7...as opposed to when you would shift a normal piston car..the redlines are so different..bearing noise is eventually gonna be present over the piston car with lower redline shifts..just my thoughts

I would say it is normal. But I think it's the throwout bearing because when you press in the clutch the noise goes away.Pilot bearings will usually make a noise when the clutch is pressed.

Can't be the throw out bearing. When you let the clutch out, the throw out bearing is doing anything. When you press the clutch pedal down, the clutch hydraulics move the clutch fork. Fork has the throwout bearing attached, which moves the pressure plate. The bearing doesn't actually rotate, so you wouldn't hear any noise from it. Go to www.howstuffworks.com and do a search on "clutch" to learn how it works. The only bearings that would make that noise are the pilot bearing and the tranny main bearing. The tranny input shaft rotates while the tranny is in neutal, and all the gear do too. The free wheel on their shafts. When you select a gear, the shift fork pushes a coupler into the gear you are selecting. This coupler allows that gear to be the output gear for the tranny. All the rest of the gear are still free wheeling on the shafts. Same web site above will show you pictures and video of both auto and manual tranny internal operation.

If there is any binding in the throwout bearing it will make noise when the clutch is released.I have had this problem many times before. It never really bothered me.And believe me that throw out bearing is usual always turning.Thats why the noise will go away when you hit the clutch,When you have have the clutch engaged the input shaft of the tranny is moving at the same rate as the flywheel hence no noise, but when you push in the clutch a noise could occur because the flywheel is now turning faster than the input shaft. And I aggree it could be the front transmission bearing as well. Those can make noise too, especially when the clutch is engaged.
