Pilot bearing. The pilot bearing only sees much friction when the clutch is depressed. The pilot bearing will spin on the input shaft of the tranny. The pilot bearing is pressed into the farthest aft part of the eshaft. It may have been warped or squished. They are a pain in the *** to replace, but if you have the correct tools, they can be done in less than an hour (minus the fact you have to drop the tranny.) Make sure you get a pilot bearing seal. the only place I've found them was the mazda dealer for like $3.00

that seal makes the difference of weather or not you need to replace the bearing in 6 months.

EDIT: and yes, it could be the trow out bearing too... but pilot bearings seem to go more often it seems like.
