Clutch Bolts?

I just noticed on ACT's instructions that you're supposed to use Grade 10.9/SAE Grade 8 bolts on the clutch pressure plate.

NO ONE sells them in that size (8mm fine pitch), except online or mail order. I went to 3 different places (including Fastenal and another place that's basically a warehouse full of bolts in every OTHER size, including 8mm coarse)

I suppose I could get them off an RX-7 if a junk yard has one with the engine pulled and it still has the clutch...

But I seemed to be fine even with only 2 of the originals which are high grade, and a bunch of grade 5. OTOH, my clutch was never that good and I couldn't do what you'd call a drag launch.

So do I absolutely need to get high grade bolts for an ACT heavy duty clutch? Or would an NA be OK with primarily Grade 5?

Let me put it too you this way...if the bolts fail and the pressure plate comes flying off....do you want to be in the way of it??

For the $10 it will be for someone on the forum to ship you some spare grade 8 bolts is it really worth skimping to grade 5?

It's not about being cheap. It's about wanting my car back together this weekend after 3+ months.

I've already wasted too many weekends waiting for parts, and I never had any problems with grade 5 bolts... this is a nearly stock NA after all.

It will take 2 days at the most...call Mazdatrix and get the correct OEM bolts. You do not want your clutch/pressure plate flying off mid shift!

It takes 5 days for Mazdatrix parts to get here from CA...

OTOH, I can get parts from Mazdaspeed so it's faster and cheaper from them.

But that doesn't change the fact that it's Saturday :p

I want my engine nestled in the bay this weekend. lol

Apparently not even THE INTERNETS sells 10.9 in fine thread. WTF people.

Guess I have to buy new Mazda ones... but the 2-day shipping for Mazdaspeed has gone way up, so I'd break even to get them from the stealership.

stealership may not even have them in stock.

Post on the boards, there may be a local guy with extra bolts.

They don't. But you can get them overnighted for like 2 bucks extra, which I did (will cost about 21 bucks).

Ideally you want to use new bolts for a clutch job... especially with a competition clutch.
