Clutch Advise, Please.

I believe its time for me to change the clutch/PP on my 87 T2. Let me explain the symptoms: When I try engaging first from a stop it sounds like I trying to jam the gear in with no clutch. When this happened I was a couple blocks from the house so I gave the clutch a few good pumps and was able to get in gear and it immediatly started rolling. So I am guessing its probably more the press.plate and TObearing than the clutch itself.

I need some input ,yes I have searched, on an A/M clutch and pressure plate set-up on a mostly stock T2.

Thanks in advance.
Steven

What happens if you depress the clutch and leave it depressed for a minute (foot on) and then remove it? Is it slower than normal to return to it's normal position?

No, it pops right back out like normal and as soon as I noticed clutch issue I looked for any leaking fluid and resevoir is full. Are you thinking its the cluth master cylinder, I think thats what its called. I am pretty sure its the PPlate because at idle in neutral it was making a funny meshing, scrapping noise.

Thanks for the info, what about replacments?

Close, I was thinking the slave cylinder or something hydraulic related. Foot off the clutch, car in neutral, is it making noise?

Yes, but only off and on a sort of springy noise, sounds like a tooth or whatever those fingers are called on the PP is broken or wore out, its a hard noise to describe.

Clutch

Just thought I'd PM you. If, as you say, in neutral and egine at idle, and you hear a ,probably the pilot bearing as the throwount bearing wouldn't be turning.
I also believe if you can't get it in gear, it's the hydraulics.
The test-holding the pedal to the floor for about a minute- isn't to see how fast the pedal returns, it's to see if you have any adiitional play at the top of the pedal. First check free play @ 1/2" let's say, hold the pedal down for a minute then let it out and check the freeplay again. If more than 1/2" master gone, which it probably is.

Flywheel][Clutch disc][Friction plate][Clutch disc][Pressure plate...

Obviously since we are not there and cannot hear feel... what is going on, its kinda hard to make an educated guess...
But I have heard similar noises to that you've explained. It sounds like a possible Bearing blowout in one of the clutch discs, resulting in wobling or rattleing of one or more clutch discs. Which would explain the hard getting into gear factor... Especially since it sounds like it happened all at ounce for the most part?
If it had slowly started doing this I would say it was just worn out.
The pilot bearing has to be sooo precise... that if it was blown... worn... etc, your input shaft would be wobbling all around like a mother... this would cause for a verry vibrating like ride when driving in gear cluch fully depressed!

What happens when your in gear driving and you get on it fairly hard?

Does the clutch feel normal? (fluid?) No soft spots... or blurps/bubbles of air coming up out the master cylender when you work the cluch?

Hope this helped...
-Blake

Thought I'd try again. I'm at work, and had to send response before the owner came by.
Let's confirm when the sound begins. If at idle, press pedal slightly (take up free play) to get throw out bearing to start turning. Any noise? If not, go to floor. If noise starts when pedal down, pilot bearing. Still believe it's hydraulics.
Sorry for the numerous posts.

I just got a chance to check her out. I was able to throw it in and out of first a few times just rollin back and fourth in my garage. After that I was unable to get in gear. So it cant be the hydos and not the trans so I think its safe to order me up all the clutch needs. What do you guys think?
What do you guys recommend for my T2? Its not a daily driver, mostly stock and all street.

Thanks for the help so far.
