clogged cat, new exhaust recommendations?
Hello all,
Just bought an 88 convertible, my first rotary
It is very down on power and anything over half throttle it wont accelerate. Especially over 4000 rpms. When its cold it bucks and hesitates at anything more than 1/4 throttle.
Ive replaced the plugs and wires with NGK. Coils are good.
Ive checked the 5th and 6th port actuators, the rear was not opening, the front was. I picked up a junkyard actuator and it opens now.
Ive read a lot on the 3800 rpm grounding threads and am looking into an installation similar to http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/.
But I dont think that will completly solve my issues. I can hear a hissing from under the car, near the main cat at idle, louder with RPMs. I plan on doing a vacuum check in the near future, that should tell me if its a plugged cat or exhaust leak, or somethign completly different. Any recommendations on an exhaust for an otherwise stock car? I dont want a loud full exhaust, I plan to keep the stock mufflers. The smog restrictions are pretty lax here in the Denver area so I can eliminate 2 of the 3 cats. I was thinking a header into a hi-flow cat, into the stock dual mufflers. Any thoughts?
Anyone have any thoughts on anything else I should check out? It does leak oil but does not smoke (unless it sits for more than a day, and then initial startup has a nice bluish cloud). The caked on oil seems to be mostly on the left side of the motor, although it drips in several spots (hard to tell with the under tray still installed).

I "lost" my emissions....
had the same prob. just pick up some 88 injectors ans swap them in. the 88 used high impedence injectors, whereas 86-87 were low. and 89-92 dont fit i think. but chances are that someone swapped in some 86 or 87 fuel injectors and thats causing your issue

I hadnt thought about the injectors...
Anyway to test them before just throwing new ones in? What ohms should they be reading?
Also...I forgot to mention. My oil pressure drops very low at idle, well below the 30 mark. It comes back up quickly with RPM though. Thoughts?

honestly..you should check the split air at the catalytic converter and see if the pipe is broke..the aux ports i believe are actuated by the back pressure from the cat(exhaust) the hissing could be a leak and that could help your hesitation at the higher rpms..someone will jump in if it's not even close though..but hey it dosn't hurt to inspect your exhaust ..good luck

for the oil thats normal, the fuel injectors part code should be 823, but you need to pull them out to see it. if you know anyone who works on 7's they can help or just get a fsm or haynes repair guide they have detailed instructions.

yeah www.rx7.com has the RB header & bonez hi-flow as a combo somewhere in the exhaust section. This is the RB header, and the bonez with all the right pipe on it to connect directly from the header to the catback.

Dasz33,
I've had good success replacing the three catalytic converters with only 1 main cat (see pictures below). I'm using magnaflow and partial headers (connects from the exhaust collector to the main cat). See details here:

Thank you guys, that RB+Bonez combo looks good. I like vaughnc's idea though. Are there cat's out there with the air fitting already there or is that something a competent welder can take care of? Does the air fitting have to come out of the cat? Any reason it can be anywhere on the exhaust? All it does is provide pressure for the actuaters on the 5th and 6th ports, correct?

Note magnaflow is cheap cheap cheap and is perfect if you're thinking of a straightthrough exhaust, but it's not going to last more than 30K miles with constant use (which is the perfect solution for non-daily drivers). Bonez will last, but it's much more expensive. Concerning HP gains, about the same.
I've got a FULL Racing Beat exhaust ordered that I'm planning to adapt this setup to. I ordered a 2nd set of flanges for easy "bolt/unbolting." Just replace RB's presilencer with this setup.
