Cheapest way to ship an engine?

I have an engine and transmission I need to get shipped from San Jose, CA to Jackson, MS. Yellow Freight estimated about $340 to ship it. Does anyone know of or has anyone used any way to ship an engine cheaper than this? This estimate just seemed a lot higher than what I was expecting. Any help is appreciated!

Call around to local trucking companies. I was quoted a similar price by Yellow, and found an obscure mom an pop company that brought an engine from Atlanta to Memphis for 50 bucks.

Many times there will be a broker near a large truck stop. These guys help truckers out by finding loads for them. A broker may know of a trucker out there coming this way with less than a full load. You will be surprised what kind of a deal you can find if you are patient.

One last thing, which ever way you go, pick up your engine at the trucking company's local dock in Jackson. Having it delivered to your home will cost at least 50 bucks more.

The lighter you can make it the cheaper it will be. The best way to ship is to put on a pallet and use plastic bands to secure it to the pallet. (you know the translucent bands with the metal crimps)
But be sure to shop around with different freight companies.

I just had one shipped to me through UPS for $159.00. It went from California to Louisiana.

thank you guys. I think I just over guessed the weight. It should be closer to 300 lbs. than 400. which is what I estimated the first time. At 300lbs it costs $260 from Cali to Miss. I am picking it up at the dock and I think that he is taking it to the dock.
