cheap rebuild questions
ok in my automotive class we're in engines. so i decide i am going to overhaul my blown s5 engine. i am hopefully going to get the gasket set from mazdatrix. and am going to attempt to use some old seals off of a running s4. (these are both na's)
i have very little money just enough for a gasket set. which i was told to get if i were to even attempt this rebuild. if i am using old seals can i use old gaskets too. or use some gasket maker? any suggestions or helpful hints would be great. this is a learning project but wouldnt mind getting my motor working in the process.
a few more questions. is there any way to rebuild the electric omp or make sure its in working order while i have it out? is it a good idea to take out the rear diffusers while i have it apart. i dont really want to attempt a street port seeing as there is not that much of gain on a na. (contraversal i know)
please no flaming. thanx

On the subject of porting, I would port the 5th/6th ports. There is no downside in the lower end power and helps once the ports open up. Best of both worlds. You don't get as much gain as a complete streetport, but it lacks the normal downside.
If the diffusers are the exhaust diffusers, then taking them out is up to you. I have mine out. It frees up the exhaust a bit, but makes it louder. I don't mind the volume (stock manifold --> straight pipe --> stock ypipe back). Once again, it's up to you.

SureShot no gaskets? i sent u a pm
My5ABaby is there a certain template for the 56 ports? and are you talking about the manifold or the actual housings? or the ports themselves?
the exhaust diffusers only quiet it down? i thought there was slight restriction to it.

Nonturbo 6 port engines, auxiliaries (5/6 ports) only:
I have recently developed a special version of SP unique to the 6 port nonturbo engines (84-91 13B). This port allows for a nice top end power increase with absolutely NO decrease in low end pull, driveability, or even emissions testing. This is accomplished by only porting the 5th and 6th intake ports, and a very light exhaust port. The “lower” 4 intake ports, responsible for idle and low rpm driving remain untouched, and so do the normal driving characteristics of the engine. Only at/above 3800rpm,when the auxiliary ports open, does the porting take effect and move more air through. No emissions test that I am aware of, even the dyno/roll test, pushes the engine to the point where the auxiliary ports open, therefore this is a good way to “hide” your performance gains from the emissions test. For those who don’t care about this, I can/do still port all the ports of a 6 port engine, though there isn't much performance gain for the 4 smaller ports, and there isn't much room to port into them anyway.
For exhaust ports, I cut out the nonturbo exhaust diffusers with a torch on all streetported engines. This leaves a port sleeve basically the same as a turbo sleeve. Noise is slightly increased, as well as flow. The port shape itself is not altered.

Simple version: the exhaust diffusers quiet it down by restricting it (or something along those lines; altering the airflow in some way).

Ja, get with me if you order from mazdatrix. I can try to get the same salesman as I had, he is from Winter park, but lives in Cali. now. He knows about our club. I have a tps tuner from mtrix if you need sometime.
