Question Changing Entire Speedo Cable, whats this??

Hey whats up.

So im putting in a new speedocable. The cable that goes inside the speedo enclosure got lost when it came undone from the tranny. So i had to get teh whole thing from Mazdatrix. So i disconnected the cable from the tranny so i can have more leverage behind the gage cluster. I disconnected the speedo cable from teh cluster and am in the process of pulling it out.

Now it wont come out that easy cause of the clip, but i see that theres a white wire going inot the back of the cluster but its not connected to the CLUSTER. So what is this wire.

I have no time to trace the wire right now cause i gotta be out and it looks like its gonna rain. I just want to know what that wire is. So that when i go to put in the new cable i know what its for and how not to damage it. Lol

Here are some Pics

P.S Anything else i should do while its disconnected, some maintenance?

The white wire is something aftermarket, probably for an aftermarket security system or something like that.

Has to be something aftermarket that was there from a previous owner.

Never really seen a speedo cable that comes with a wire through the plastic surround. Someone just used that as a spot to safely run a wire.

Just follow the wire and see if it has a point where you can either disconnect it or cut it and reconnect it.

I changed my speedo cable out and there was nothing there like that. I also didn't have to take apart my dash. I just took off the bottom side under the steering wheel and was able to reach up behind the gauges and plug it in.

I cut it car does not start now. I followed the wire under the dash and i lost it under the steering column. Its bunched together with a whole bunch of other wires and ziptied together. So i followed the wire under the car and it appears to be going into the starter. Now i know everyone on two forums keeps saying it doesnt belong there but my car doesnt have an aftermarket alarm system and no signs it ever had one. Now i can just connect the friggin wire and make it work, but i want to know why its there.

Here are some more pics

Scotch Locks (often referred to a botch locks, because they come undone and are really only temporary connections- yet some aftermarket electronics installers use them as a permanent connection).

They are not factory by any means and should never be used for anything but a temporary connection

You will need to see where it is running or just hook it back up after you have replaced your speedo cable.

It appears to be going to the ignition switch, but the steering column surround is still there so you can't tell.

Where does it go under the hood?

Thanks for your help ICE. I followed it and it goes all the way under the car towards teh starter. Then from there i cant see it. Ima jack up the car more and see where it runs.

What are those botch things used for since i dont have an alarm or anything aftermarket.

I already put the SPeedocable on. Now i just gonna connect that wire to get the car started. But still want to follow the wire and and see whats up.

Yeah the cable is run right onto the starter.

Can i get a switch that opens and closes the circuit (toggle switch). Kinda like a ghetto rig security system?

What gauge wire is that?

WEll i had an auto transmission and when i converted to manual i used the auto speedo on manual tranny and it worked. I lost taht cable so i purchased a new speedo from mazdatrix and i got the manual one, its just a little shorter than the auto but the cable is the same. So t2 tranny cablea and non turbo should be the same and should work.

No real tricks just gotta make sure the lil notch goes into the tranny hole and then you just tightening the speedocollar and ure set.

MAKE SURE THE COLLAR is tight, my **** came loose and i had to pay $50+ for a new friggin cable

I had my speedo cable come unscrewed from the tranny while driving too. I grabbed a couple different cables from the junkyard, the only difference I found was the lengths. Internally they all looked the same. I left my old sleeve and just oiled and slid the new cable inside it. Didn't have to take the dash apart, only cost me a few dollars for the cable. =)
