I've removed the springs without springs compressors before. Its not as scary as it sounds. Put your body weight onto the springs so they compress a bit while a buddy uses an impact gun to loosen the top nut. Once the nut is out, take your weight off the springs and youre done. Do the same to put them back in. The springs wont fly out killing everyone in the area.

If you've never used springs compressors before, it will be a nerve wrecking experience while you compress the springs. Alot of autoparts stores rent them out for free as long as you leave a deposit. Return them in one piece and you get your money back.
Dont compress the hell out of the springs to remove them because the springs can fly out if the compressors fail. When the strut assembly is out of the car, the springs are almost completely extended. Compressing them a little is all you need to remove them.

check it out, ive done many springs and struts on these cars. you can lift the car and remove out the bottom bolts 17mm but leave the top 14mm where the mounts are. then break loosen the middle strut nut but dont remove. next loosen the 14mm strut mount nuts just enough to angle around inside the wheel well and shoot the spring out to the floor from the main strut mount nut. this works for the rear as well. be careful when trying these on other rwd cars and never on fwd cars because the spring will get stuck on the lower control arm or axle.

yea I just did my springs with no compressor.
I have swapped springs on a **** ton of cars and I have always gone and rented the compressor but this time I didn't, I just used an impact gun on the top shock nut till it was about 3 turns away from off.
layled the shock on a towell, and rapped the shock up in the towell and used a wrench on the nut from outside the towell.
( mainly just so the nut and peices didn't shoot off everywhere )
it will just pop back afew inches. nothing serious.

FYI spring compressors run about $40 and makes this much easier and less likely to hurt yourself.
Impact the 22mm nut all the way off with your foot on the strut facing a wall. It will kick a bit as it decompresses, but nothing I'd consider dangerous as long as you face the spring towards the wall and keep your hands out of the way. Putting anything other than stock springs back on is pretty easy , compressing stock springs to reinstall the big nut will take some umph.
