Cats Question....
Hey guys, I got my Rex running, but now it needs to be smogged before I can finish my registration. My problem is, the dealership discovered that the cats are probably not stock. The dude said that one of them has some auxilary holes that were welded up, and that the RX-7 doesnt have any auxilary holes.
...So my question is, I am wondering if it would be okay to get a Bonez high-flow cat (probably the 2.5" TurboFlo System ) to replace it instead of getting stock replacements. I would save money and get some performance out of it. But my question is, would it be safe? I have all stock everything, from the injectors, to the intake, to the ECU... everything is stock. So would it be safe to put that on my car without running the risk of getting too lean?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
SomeDude

Bonez SuperFlo Worked for N/A in Ohio
Replacing the rusted out stock dual converters dramatically improved the sound and feel of the engine during acceleration (sorry, no dyno yet).
Emissions tests were passed with flying colors giving about 32 ppm of hydrocarbons and 0.01 ppm of carbon monoxcide (limits are 168 ppm for HC and 1.08 ppm for CO in Ohio).
Also, the seller of this part, Rotary Performance, gave good customer service by promptly shipping a missing piece for no extra charge.

Thanks alot for the feedback. I know it will give me some more performance and allow for passing smog. But my main concern here is will it be safe to put on a stock car? Will I run too lean or anything if I put it on and everything else on the car is stock? There will be enough fuel and everything right?
Anyone know? I hear scary stories about modding the intake/exhaust before the fuel system is ready, so I am just wondering if the cars stock fuel system will be adequate if the TurboFlo is all I wanted to do for now.
So, absolutely everything on the car being stock, would this be a safe thing to add?
Thanks

I hate to bump this up, but if someone would be able to answer my question it would be VERY helpful, since I only have until the end of this month to get my car smogged. (If I ask the DMV for another temp. permit, they will have a major cow). So please forgive my persistence.

why wouldn't you just run down to the local smog pro or whatever and have them do it?? they won't care if the cats are not stock, only if they leak and the car passes emissions.

no, actually the dealership didnt smog it, it was just something they discovered while fixing something else. And they said it wouldnt pass smog because of that, but it was not there to get smogged (they just brought it to my attention because they knew I still needed to smog it).
