I started my car up today, 88 GXL NA, for about 10 minutes, and was revvin it up quite well at one point. For the hell of it I got out and looked under my car, I think its one of the cats, Im not sure-Ive only had this car not even a week now, but anyways its the thing right before the pipes "Y" of in the back. It was glowin orange where the straight part of the Y goes into it. Then after like 5 minutes it was fine. WTF?

 

the cat was probably clogged and you blew out a hole in it finally would be my first guess. see if you can get a sniff test done someplace and see if the cat is still good.

 

Better yet, take the cat off and clean it out

 

does it smell like rotten eggs too? thats not uncommon if a cat is glowing like that, but its deffinately clogged

 

same thing happened to my precat #1, that little ****** farted and smelled like rotten eggs

 

It was only glowing for like 5 minutes, still mean its clogged? maybe that would explain my rough idle. and is there anyother way to unclog it besides takin it off?

 

no. if its glowing then it is definately clogged. . to fix that you have to take the cat off. and you have to options. 1-gut the cat. 2-replace it, preferably w/ a high flow cat. the rough idle may be fixed by replacing/gutting the cat. many people have that problem w/ thier cars

I would love to gut it, but i live in Ohio, the land that holds the E-check. So guttin its not an option. ****, if I have to take it off, that means even more leaks.damnit

 

Anyone know if a clogged cat will make your run hotter? I would think so, havin heat prblems here, trying to diagnose the problem.
