There is a cover that holds the top anchor point on the seat belt, pry it up to expose a 14mm bolt that holds it on. Unbolt that. Once you've exposed the locking mechanism you can unbolt that I think it's another 14mm bolt and a screw. However I'm curious as to why you're removing the setabelts if you just want the carpet out...
If you want the carpet out remove the dash, remove the selector unit, unbolt the locking mechanism on the back bone. Pull up the carpet from the scuff pads in. Note: that the backing on the floor and under the carpet tends to get tacky to the body so lifing it will be required to break it loose. becarful not to tear it. Pull it out through the hatch. should take about 10 minutes or less once the dash is out.

Damn, I just did this last week.
when you pull the bolts remember to keep everything lined up the way it was when you pulled it. Bolt, little washer, big washer, crush etc......
Did you pull your dash to get it out or did you get lucky? Im stilll peicing my dash back together.

My buddy just hacked his 87 carpet out cuz it was nasty, rain damage and the such. How easy is it to take the dash out? I want my nasty carpet gone, plus i need to reach the firewall where the heatercore lines come in, one was mashed up by previous owner-and the wipers for some reason! no heat , no wipers, i can barley drive my car untill summer!
