Carpet replacing... console moving... dashboard lifting?
Man, does anyone know how to remove the carpet under the dashboard? WTF? I need to take the whole big piece out, and I'm really fit to be tied here. Any help?

on the 1st gens you an usually loosen the dash and lift it enough to get the carpet out. if not the dash is easy to take out. you have to remove the center console, and the defroster grill thing, then there are 3 bolts up top next to the windshield, 2 on each side next to the vents, and 4? down by the center console. then you unbolt the steering column from the dash (2 bolts) and then you should be able to move the dash enough to disconnect the wiring harness (2 big, 2-3more smaller ones).

haha.... i had the same problem trying to replace my carpet. boyee, was it a biiiatch!! i went to my local junk yard and found a near perfect black carpet and it was a steal. only paid $12 for the entire thing including back rear carpet! but removing it was a pain in the ***... i got so fed up that i ended up just slicing the carpet. it was hard getting thru near the firewall. since i only paid $12 i thought it was worth the cutting, til this day i can't even tell i sliced the carpet. good luck on your replacement!!!

Yea, it ain't no fun getting the carpet out nor back in.
Even with me removing the entire dash (I'm doing a
burgundy to black swap), the original carpet took myself
and one helper to break the carpet's grip on the trans
tunnel. Pull straight back, real hard!
If you want to leave the dash in, remove the console
and the four bolts, two on each side of the dash, just
forward of the stereo (#1 in the below photo). Have a
helper or two lift up on the dash while you pull on the
carpet.
It's not real hard to get the dash out. Three bolts on
top, two bolts on each side near the doors (#2 in the
above photo) two on each side of the center part of the
dash (#1 in the above photo) and the two bolts on the
steering column.
Here's my series 4 burgundy to series 5 black swap
going on in my project '87 TII.

I did my own swap by myself and it was a back breaker. My back was sore like crazy...Im not tall so manuvering inside the stripped car was not a big deal. Its pulling the carpet and removing the damn dashboard that sucks.
MIKEL did you have a hard time removing those 3 stupid little screws on top???..I had to modify a drill bit so i can fit it under the windshield. Then i had to order a new defroster grill from Mazdatrix the same day because it broke it 5 pieces..
