Carpet/Dash removal (slightly different questiong then norm)
OK so I'm currently battleing rust. I am trying to pull up my carpet so I can get a good look at the rust under it and try and figure out how to handle it. I know that the dash is supposed to come out in order to remove it with out cutting and I know how to remove the dash, BUT is there a good way to do it without disconecting every thing (guage cluster, logicon etc.)?
Im hoping that i can just pull all of the bolts and that will give me enough room to slide the carpet out, but was wondering if anyone has done it this way.
Thanks

If you're just trying to get a look at the rust, you can fold the carpet up and out of the way temporarily by just removing the seat, door sill scuff plate and the plastic trim piece just behind it, kick panel just in front of the door, and whatever seatbelt parts your car has on the floor (varies from S4 to S5 to 'Vert and I see from your profile that you have two cars). Once you get the carpet up, you'll have to remove the piece of Masonite that fits under the door opening to see where most of the rust usually is. You'll be able to see the entire floor without having to remove the center console or dash. I used this method to determine that my old '90 GTU was swiss cheese and ready for the junkyard.
Now if you're going to be cutting and welding, you may eventually have to do the whole dash removal if you want to avoid messing up the carpet.

Well the damn thing is out!!! PITA! Pulled the dash, pulled the heater core and viola! out it came.
The rust isnt quite as bad as i thought, its just in the spots that I thought it was in to begin with. Probably coulda left it in to do the repairs but I really wanted to know where all of the rust was.
Now i just gota figure the best way to clean it.
