car wont start... tried search but too many things to sift thru

Well, I drove it this morning and then tonight, (about 50F) it just decides not to start. So I don't think its a compression issue. Actually not sure if it might be. it has 152k w/o ever seeing a rebuild. But I just drove it about 9 hrs earlier.

When I try and start it, it cranks and everything but, the motor doesnt turn over.

Just looking for a list of things to try before taking it somewhere.

I've heard of the 80a main fuse, and don't know where its located.

Change the spark plugs maybe ?

Car leaks power steering fluid, some leaked onto spark plug wires, don't know if that could affect anything. The spark plug wires are magnacore

Anything else I can try ?

BTW its an 87 T2

I don't think my engine is flooded but, if it is, is it impossible to get it started, and how would I be able to un-flood my engine.

I changed my oil yesterday to 10w40 Syntec ran fine up till now. Don't know what oil it had in it before, had the car 2 weeks and now it won't start.

I think your engine may be flooded. Take out your spark plugs and see if they are soaked in gasoline and if they are your engine is flooded. You will have to remove all the spark plugs clean them off and dry them off before installing. Pull the EGI out in the engine bay get in the car and crank the engine for about 10 seconds. Then go back to the engine bay and reinstall the EGI fuse and try starting the car normally. It may take several tries to do but it usually works.

In the engine bay fuse box on the driver hand side. I dont remember which fuse it is and cant look since I sold my car on friday but if you have the fuse box cover it will say EGI on it. I would recommend you download the FSM (factory service manual) for your car at www.fc3s.org or wwww.iluvmyrx7.com alotta good info in there and it will tell you where everything is.

Success! I don't think it was the flooding of the engine, but dirty spark plugs and wires. Found lotsa gunk on the lower spark plug wire in the front housing. Gotta get that pwr steering leak fixed now so it doesnt happen again.

Thanks for all the help.

Check and smell your oil too. If your oil reaks of gasoline it would be a good idea to change ur oil and oil filter.
By the way..can someone give me a link to a site that has a "how-to" on making a fuel kill switch?

When I smelled the plugs for fuel, I didnt smell any, well my sense of smell is kinda delayed, so I got my friend (id: chiminoid) to smell it as well and he didnt either. I just changed my oil and with the filter, but I will take a whiff of the oil just in case.

Oh to make this little incident even better. After I got it starting again, I drove about oh about 10-15 mi, and parked it for about 2hrs at most and again... it wouldnt start. Pulled and checked 3 of the plugs and they look fine, a little dark considering they were just put in but, they looked like they were in good condition. Wipe the wires and put everything back in and still nothing. Friend went back inside the house because it got cold, and I sat in the seat and talked to "Sara" and just wished for her to start... and whatta ya know... she started.

Just a little anecdote.

Any reason why my car would start and then not start again?

First: Why are you using Syn? I thought that was bad for rotaries? You should be using Gastrol GTX Non-Syn.

Secondly: If your engine is flooded, you may want to try the ATF trick. When you try to start your car, do not use the gas, that will surely flood the engine. Go here for information on the ATF Treatment: http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/atftrick.htm

Quick question: When you try to start it, does it even crank like it's trying to start, but won't? It just keeps going, but won't fully turn over? You might want to check to see if these are the possibities:

1. Battery: Make sure it's not loose, there's enough acid in there and that it's not eating volts.
2. Your Alternator: You never know. It could be the problem.
3. Your starter: If it turns over, but won't do anything else it could just be this. Try and hear if it "clicks" when you turn it on.

I'd get these three tested. I just had my problem with the starter, and waited 6 months before it totally died on me, DO NOT DO THIS....

I wish you good luck. Let me know what happens, please

edit:

If you plan on getting new spark plugs and spark plug wires I'd suggest to get NGK. They're good, and aren't TOO expensive.

Is Syn really bad? I just thought that Syn of the 80's were crap but syn is better now that we're in the 21st century now right ? I remember reading a quote from somone down at M2 saying syn is not bad for rotaries, it was a misconception because one company had crap syn oil and crapped up an rx7 and then that lead to everyone saying syn doesnt belong in rotaries. I mean correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're talking about Oil... no, not for rotaries... rotaries don't like syn oil.....

The only time I believe you'd use syn is when you convert to 2-stroke.. but I could be wrong (SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME??)

I have a fuel kill switch. And getting used to remembering to switch it off before leaving the car so I dont think I was flooding, just bad sparks and clogged wires. I probably shoulda mentioned the fuel kill switch earlier. sorry.
