MD Car won't start...need help (lots of details)!

It has been a bit of a downer. My vert has not run in over a month now. I wanted to post where I am with the car and see if anyone can help me out. Also if there is anyone in Maryland near me that is really good with these engines perhaps you could stop by just to give my car a listen.

This all started about 2 months ago when the car would constantly flood. It was to the point that every startup was very hard and could only get it started by blipping the throttle as the car was turning over.

I decided to tear the car apart in order to have the fuel injectors serviced. I took everything apart sent the fuel injectors and they came back with the company telling me they didn't seem to be in terrible shape and they saw no sign of leaking.

I put everything back together. A few notes about this. I changed out all vacuum hoses with silicone hoses, I replaced the fuels lines, coolant hoses, and air hoses. The only disaster was when putting the upper manifold onto the lower I sheared two bolts off. One is the long center one the other is the one stud that is closest to the front of the car. I used rtv to try to insure a good seal.

After getting everything back together the car will not start at all. It will start to turn over the rpms will get to roughly 800-1000 and then the car just dies each time. If I blip the throttle it has no effect at all anymore. I tried filling the engine with some two cycle oil and this caused the rpms to go to about 1300-1500 but again it would immediately die.

I do think I hear some type of pulsating air as I crank the engine. Perhaps somewhere deep inside I didn't quite attach something correctly or perhaps the manifold isn't sealed very well, but my question would be would either of these cause the symptom of the car the turning over and the throttle having no effect anymore. Also before I took the car apart when it would flood things would smell very gassy now I don't smell nearly as much gas as I did before. I know some fuel must be going but maybe not enough?

A few other notes. I did pull a plug and verified I am getting spark. I put a pressure gauge on the fuel line right after the fuel filter and everything check out ok and the system held pressure fine too. I also bought a piston engine compression tester. I tested one housing after having tried starting it for awhile (it was probably flooded at this point) it would read roughly 65psi each pulse. I put a little 2 cycle in and then it read roughly 85psi each pulse. Each pulse was very even with the others. Not great but I think good enough.

The engine is a stock S5 with about 100k on it. The car before I took it apart would run fine once I got her started. If anyone can give me some ideas of what the problem could be that would be great. I am just getting very frustrated and hate having my vert not running during the summer.

Thanks!

So the UIM is only held down by 3 studs/nuts? In my experience, having only 1 nut missing off of the manifold will cause a pretty good sized vac leak. If the long center bolt is gone, there's no way the inside portions of any of the 4 runners are sealed completely. You're looking at 3 moderate sized leaks and 1 big one where the front stud is gone. A small leak will cause a surging idle. What you have almost definitely won't let the car idle at all.

Drill out the broken stud, tap it, replace it & get a new center bolt. Get yourself a new UIM/LIM gasket as well because the RTV will have made a mess of the one you've got. It will work, but pieces of hardened RTV will get sucked into the motor.

Think one can drill and tap with it on car or is that asking for trouble? I just have removed the lower intake before and worried I'll break something else. Thanks for all the help.
