Car starts, then dies instantly.

I have an 86 NA bone stock RX-7. About once every 2 weeks it decides to not start on me. It is always after the car has been driven around for awhile. I start the car, and it stars, revs to about 500 rpm, and then dies. Usually the car will rev to about 2000 rpm when i start it. After about 5 minutes of sitting, the car will start normally. I think it has something to do with whatever makes the car rev up like that when it's started. Thanks for your help.

Check the intake piping to the throttle boy. That came off on me and it was the air that was being sucked in after the MAF sensor that was stumbling the engine.

"not be getting enough back pressure"
why would this cause it to die?

it is most likely an intake leak. this happens all the time the reason it will start is the enrichment at first. can you keep it running if you throttle it?
one more thing it could be is bad fuel pump or bad fuel regulator. the pump can't keep enough pressure to keep the car running. this happened to me on my supra.

it sounds like the MAF to me. it is either disconnected or you have a gigantic air leak after the MAF.

it sounds like a bad afm or bad primary injectors if it dies like that or then again vacuum leak or clogged fuel filter

This keeps happening to me everyday for the past 2 weeks now. I have to step on the gas and hold it until the car decides to stay on. However, when I was removing my airpump this afternoon, I decided to try and check my air intake hoses buy shaking and tightening some connections and afterwards my car starts and stays on just fine, so far.! Anywayz, it could really be just your air intake coming loose and creating a leak.. I think!

It sounds like a big intake leak. I had the same problem after installing the engine and couldn't get it to stay at idle. After some cussing I saw the brake booster line was off. DUH. If it does start, you don't have any fuel problems. If you did, it wouldn't start at all. Nor do you have any electrical problem (ie coils, plugs). Try looking in the back of the engine for any loose vacuum lines or cracked lines.
